The Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin and The Daily Caller's Mickey Kaus hash over Paul Ryan joining the ticket, give a primer on welfare reform, Medicare, say it ain't so Joe, muse on whether or not Ryan needs a new tailor, and discuss the possibility of an Israeli attack on Iran. And yes, this week a Left Coast/Right Coast first: Mickey and Jennifer review a movie. Well, Jennifer does, anyway.

Re: Hope Springs
Best podcast ever. Mickey is able to get more than a few words in before Jennifer talks on top of him. She is eating, so maybe that should be a rule for Jennifer, to take five sips and two bites before replying. She does have good points. Mickey is worth hearing.
Great discussion about pros and cons of Ryan. If you want a detailed analysis of should Ryan wear tailored suits and how quickly the media can move from we want a substantitive race to his baggy suits and his wife's $70 dress which sold out.
They also throw in a film review and Mickey gives the best line about who is sleeping with Merrill Streep. <p>two good views and well worth the listen.

Re: Hope Springs
This one loaded twice from iTunes, with file names 'Hope Springs.mp3' and 'Hope Springs 1.mp3'.
The latter seems to have 30 seconds of silence at the end. Is that the only difference?

Gosh, why am I having trouble accessing? I've never had this problem before. ... Can't get Young Guns either. Guess it's my problem. Woe is me.

We put up a slightly corrected version about an hour later. The latter one is the right file.
Leslie, what issues are you having?

Re: Hope Springs
Folks, when you talk about movies, could you give us the titles? Not everybody is as plugged into pop culture as those in L.A. and D.C.

Re: Hope Springs
This podcast made me finally become a member. Now I don't have to feel guilty about listening for free. I do think Jennifer has a weird concept of what "thrifty" means. Apparently "only" $70 for a dress is thrifty. And the helots only buy tailor made shirts now and again as opposed to all the time.

Re: Hope Springs
This has not been my favorite podcast on the site, but this was a pretty good episode. The more that non-political topics are thrown in, the more interesting it becomes.

Re: Hope Springs
Jon, welcome to Ricochet. For a good dress, $70 is a decent price. What do you think about Ryan's suits? I guess image does matter or do you think it helps him?

I can confirm that Jenn is in fact not eating. We had some Skype issues throughout this show (we stopped and started three times) and you are hearing artifacts from those problems.

Show me someone who thinks 65 yr olds shouldn't wear blue jeans, and I'll show you someone who has never met someone from the working class.

Re: Hope Springs
1) Mickey is getting desperate in his continually less logical rationale for Never Making Any Change To Medicare Whatsoever. The sum total of his position now is that insurance companies will violate their coverage contracts with impunity, but Your Congressman will always force CMMS to pay up, no matter how ridiculous the request?
2) Jennifer really didn't know that Kohl's Dept. Store is a Wisconsin company and the family business of Wisconsin Sen. Herb Kohl? Washington is indeed an ever more insular and self-absorbed place.

Re: Hope Springs
Great fun as always. The Jennifer & Mickey pairing is so surprisingly excellent, entertaining, informative.
Along the way Jennifer mentioned a movie preview about charter schools featuring big name talent including Viola Davis & Maggie Gyllenhaal. The movie premieres at the GOP convention on Aug. 28th with a panel of hosts including Jeb Bush, Condi Rice, Michelle Rhee, Campbell Brown, and director Daniel Barnz. Check it out:
