On the Main Feed, Peter Robinson cites sentences from the SCOTUS dissent that raise the question of what limits Congress now has on the power to coerce.  "Congress already possesses expansive power to regulate what people do. Upholding the Affordable Care Act under the Commerce Clause would give Congress the same license to regulate what people do not do."

So, I'd like to pose the question:  What sorts of coercion -- regulating what people do not do -- might a conservative Congress enact, if it wished, that would make liberals regret their celebration of this expansion of power?  How about these?  Congress requires that you...

  1. own a firearm
  2. learn English
  3. support your local Boy Scouts troop
  4. take a Civics class

Any other ideas?

Once pregnant and you decide not raise the child, you must give the child up for adoption or pay a tax. You can have an abortion, you just have to pay a $10,000 (or more) tax.

Actually, the Constitution's milita clause arguably lets Congress require firearm ownership.

The future of Social Security and Medicare depend on a growing population.  Tax those not having children - gay couples included...

If you make it to 30 without being married and having at least 1 child, you'll be forced to pay a tax equal to the child tax credit, in order to support those who are going to the trouble and expense of raising future citizens. It's for the common good, and it's only fair.

For every 5 years you fail to do your duty and reproduce (or adopt), you'll be taxed for an additional child, up to the age of 50.

I always seem to join the conversations after Western Chauvinist has made a great point. To take it a step further, given that our birthrate is something like 2.3 (just above replacement rate, if I recall) and Europe is 1.6 or something bad, we can easily make the point that for OUR NATIONAL SURVIVAL we must make non child raising against...drum roll...the common good. Taxes to follow. Actually we have a form of this with property taxes paid by empty nesters to support schools they have no kids in. Other fun things the govt can now compel us to do:

  • Buy vehicles of certain govt owned car companies
  • do banking and have money managed at govt bailed out banks
  • visit certain national parks to increase fees (and learn about nature)
  • shop at stores in govt enterprise zones

Ha- this could go on for hours. (oh, wait...)

PETA will have to eat bacon and sign an affidavit informing the general public that they loved it.

A conservative Congress might be able to compel people to do this. And then the people would hand their heads to them. And rightly so.

2010 saw a large group on the left handed their heads because of the passage of Obamacare. It's time to continue the process. It's not over yet.

I think we should all be required to read the Master and Commander series and learn to play the cello.
