They smashed the windows and were "dispersed" by the Marines.

Syrian government supporters smashed windows at the U.S. Embassy in Damascus on Monday, raised a Syrian flag and scrawled graffiti calling the American ambassador a "dog" in anger over the envoy's visit last week to an opposition stronghold, witnesses said.

French Embassy security guards in the capital fired in the air to hold back supporters of President Bashar Assad's regime who were also protesting the French ambassador's visit to the same city, Hama, in central Syria. Protesters smashed embassy windows and shattered the windshield of a diplomatic SUV outside the compound. The French flag was removed and replaced with a Syrian one.

The Obama Administration plans to "formally protest" this, apparently.

Shouldn't it really be standard diplomatic practice to formally withdraw your ambassador when the host country fails to protect your embassy?  And by "fails to protect" I mean rounds up some of the dictator's supporters to invade the place.  Hope we're counting the spoons.

Nice to see our engagement with Syria is paying dividends.  Insultingly, they sent their B-team junior varsity protestors, evidence by the fact that they couldn't come up with anything more colorful than "dog".

I trust our formal protest will involve Obama rounding up some of his union goons to smash up the Syrian embassy.  And then send in a crack team of Territory-Marking Dogs.

A "reform" measure issued from Assad government?

Sorry, yes, you absolutely did. I was blinded by anger at this news and not reading carefully. I need to calm down.

Outrageous--and very very stupid.

Looking for an excuse to get your [expletive] bombed, Assad? Having supporters attack sovereign US soil is a pretty good one!

"Obama administration....may seek compensation".

Compensation? May seek?

Like "Now, Timmy, it was pretty stupid of you you be playing baseball so close to the kitchen window. We're going to have to dock your allowance for the next month to pay for it" compensation?

No, you need to get mad.  Not ranting and raving lunatic mad, but, stone cold calculating mad.  Then direct it towards the powers that be in Washington and maybe we can turn this ship around.  Maybe.

Why don't the Marines shoot? It's considered sovereign American territory. That's what they're there for, right?

If the facts are as reported, this is a clear provocation and casus belli.

I would love to read the after action report from the Marines, it is a beautiful thing when they are permitted to use their skills and their training.

And I note the irony that a President who conducts domestic war by deploying his armies of paid activists to domestic hotspots like Madison, Wisconsin, is targeted with the same tactics by Third World dictators. Unlike the unionized police in Madison, of course, the Marines are not victims of conflicted loyalties.

Based on this report we can't say they did or did not fire. Whatever they did was very effective, the mob dispersed having accomplished nothing except painting a bigger target on their patron, Assad.

In for a penny, in for a pound. If Obama kicks off a war every two to three months until the election, one of them might prove to be popular and save him from an involuntary retirement.

They attacked the Ambassador's residence, too. I haven't seen the Turkish response yet.

Three French embassy employees have been reported wounded. France has at least condemned this in language remotely in touch with reality. I'm sorry--I have to go to dinner, no time to translate, but perhaps someone else can.

One thought before I leave--doesn't that "3:00 am phone call" commercial sound quaint now?

The French Ambassador notes the outrages against national emblems, flags burned, projectiles used to damage buildings and destroy vehicles, and holds the Syrian authorities responsible for protecting their diplomatic missions.

Following the link to Le Monde, three French personnel were wounded.

Demonstrations have been recurring since at least Thursday, but escalated Monday. France has conveyed it's outrage to the Syrian Ambassador to Paris and made it clear that France takes the matter very seriously.

For my money, pending more information, the US Marines provided the best response, Sarkozy the best diplomatic rebuff, and the White House the best show of sheer incomprehension.

I think they're trying to tell us to mind our own business.

Good advice.

Obama will never make Caliph that way.
