Today President Obama launched what Mitt Romney has mocked as a "magical misery tour" throughout the Midwest. When reporters were taken aback upon learning that the President's campaign field trip would be funded by taxpayers, White House spokesman Jay Carney rebuked them for their "air of cynicism" and ridiculed the "idea that the President of the United States should not venture forth into the country."  But perhaps that air of cynicism is well grounded.

Take a look at this clip from Obama's first stop at Cannon Falls, MN (apologies for the advertisement).  Does that look like some sort of presidential "listening tour" to you?  Looks to me just like every other campaign event the man has ever been a part of, only he seems much more defensive and irritable.

If people wonder "why Cannon Falls?" I suspect it's because it provides an old-fashioned American Main Street where, untypically, the storefronts are well-maintained and not boarded up.

Not yet.

In case you were wondering:

The racial makeup of the city [Cannon Falls] was 98.18% White, 0.18% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.42% from other races, and 0.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.08% of the population.

Which would undoubtedly be pointed out if a Republican had gone there.

Come now, would we begrudge the man for simply going out to "listen" to people? How can you even think it's politically motivated? And even if it was, so what? He has a re-election budget of only $1,000,000,000 - and that doesn't go nearly as far as it used to, what with gas prices, inflation, those pesky health care laws for campaign staff (oh, wait, he got waivers for them) ... well, you get the idea. He's selfless that one, and all we can do his complain about the money it costs for him to listen to us. We should think of it as an investment. It's just money after all. It's not even our money, it's the government's money, so what's the problem?

We should be talking about real issues, like this mess he inherited. Have you heard about that?

When all other solutions have fallen short, just focus on reelection.

Did you expect anything less ?  Wonder if any possible protestors were removed along the route, cannot have that now, can we ?

Obama Cares? The sad thing is he had to have someone write that line for him and then they probably sat around talking about how clever it sounds.

Don't you just know he's going to be an insufferable ex-President ?

I'm predicting that this tour is going to backfire on Mr. Obama drastically if the media reports truthfully. He is not in the proper frame of mind to pull this off.

It's sadder than that, Vance: it's their uber-lame attempt to re-brand "ObamaCare" as "Obama cares."

Now there is a point. As previous Presidents conduct speaking tours, open a library, etc.  Ponder the course if this a one term gig.

Perhaps lift a hammer as Carter did and help build homes ?

You are kidding right? Obama hasn't done anything that remotely productive in his entire life.

And he probably is so tolerant and self-effacing that he doesn't have a problem if people light votive candles in front of his picture, as though he were Spanish Arugula and Emperor of the Universe all rolled into one.

It makes Bush-41's "Message:  I care" seem almost graceful and empathetic.

It was only an 18 second clip but what whiny irritability! It's creepy.  Most politicians are not very reflective individuals.  You couldn't survive as a politician if you were.  But, Obama is a man whose  self-image is tied up in his ability to project as a politician; in his faith that he can control the room.  He believes he is the smartest man alive.  The reality, of course, is that he cannot control the room and he is far from being particularly smart.  I wonder if the reality of his failing presidency is bringing down the edifice of his personality? What we may be witnessing is the crack-up of a President, the likes of which hasn't been seen since Richard Nixon.

Well, this is a campaign shakedown cruise for his 3 new buses, all paid for by us, not his campaign,  These buses are coming out of the garage at $2.2 M apiece, for a total of $6.6 M and they are what he will use to get back to the people for his re-election campaign.  That's all this is, is his attempt to justify what is really a campaign expense by doing this brief trip, before he heads off to Martha's Vineyard.

He claims that these rolling behemoth/dinosaurs are going to be for all future presidents, but, really, he's just getting us to pay for his new ride, as it becomes difficult for him to demagogue corporate jet owners, when he flies about with two 747s.

I know how conspirazoid this sounds, but look at that video again... that sure looks like a green screen. Obama isn't quite the right size for those trees he's standing in front of. Look it in full-screen mode. Doesn't look right to me.

That is a very piquant observation.

I am happy to finance what I am increasingly confident is Mr. Obama's Farewell Tour.

Not kidding, just asking what the fella is going to come up with to justify his existence....  All of us have to face up to that at some point.

Not likely Obama would just become a recluse or allow himself to be relegated into something small in scope.

That is a valid question, what might he do if not re elected ?

Note also that he's gone "third person."  Tabula rasa disapproves because tabula rasa believes it's arrogant.
