Left Coast/Right Coast #11: Secretly Reasonable
Hold on to your hats, it's another Left Coast/Right Coast with Kaus and Rubin. This week, some last thoughts on Mitt vs. Newt. vs. Rick vs. Ron before the Iowa Caucus, the possible perils of blocking the payroll tax cuts, Jennifer declares herself an "Ann Coulter Republican," Mickey explains why Obama's poll numbers are going up, good bye Dear Leader, and end the year on perhaps the worst Ricochet promo of all times. Thanks, Kaus. Oh, and Happy Hanukkah.

Re: Left Coast/Right Coast #11: Secretly Reasonable
I haven't listened to this yet (just about to), but I wanted to thank you guys for 10 enjoyable podcasts and to plead with those who don't share my enthusiasm for it (I think it's third only to the main podcast and Steyn/Long/Goldberg) to be polite in expressing their disappointment.

Whatever happened to Steyn/Long/Goldberg anyway? It seems to have disappeared. Any chance we could bring it back, Yeti? I enjoyed it a lot.

As far as that particular podcast goes, we are at the mercy of elements beyond our control.

Yeti - We need to tell these people the truth! Because the Ricochet legal department was thin in the early days (before Epstein & Yoo) the show's name and basic premise was never properly secured. Therefore we may have lost the rights as evidenced by this ad in the trades:
We are desperately trying to recover, especially since no one can prove that OWN is actually on any cable system, let alone being watched.

Re: Left Coast/Right Coast #11: Secretly Reasonable
In this podcast I understood them both to say that this deal is terrible policy and horrible for social security and the country at large and THEN simultaneously argue that the Republican House members are stupid hick ideologues for refusing to vote for it. Whaaa?

Re: Left Coast/Right Coast #11: Secretly Reasonable
There's an argument to be made that the deal is terrible policy, but that the Republicans are walking into a political trap by not voting for it.
Perhaps Ms. Rubin was referring to something along these lines. If so, it doesn't show through -- obscured, no doubt, by the cloud of smug.

Sadly, I would watch that show.

Kaus: "Rubin is surprisingly controversial with Ricochet’s right-wing listeners, at least the ones that leave comments. They may not like her any better after this installment …"
the best podcast in ricochet, and more entertaining than mickey and bob at BHTV.
Re: Left Coast/Right Coast #11: Secretly Reasonable
Did I say that extending the payroll tax cut is bad policy? I think I said it's good policy given the state of the economy. Cutting the tax works quickly and might have a big "multiplier" effect -- see http://gregmankiw.blogspot.com/2009/02/my-preferred-fiscal-stimulus.html . Letting the tax go up now would be risky for the same reason. We do have to raise it back up at some point or else find another way to pay for that chunk of Social Security (which I think will have to be means-tested anyway). I wouldn't eliminate the payroll tax entirely because it creates a link between work and Social Security benefits that prevents the program from being thought of as "welfare." You have to work to get it.

Totally! And on this podcast one doesn't have to watch Bob's smug grimaces! I Seriously, though, I do especially look forward to this podcast, though I wish Jennifer could shorten her responses a bit so that Mickey could get a word in edgewise.

If you're ever so inclined, I'd love to read why you think government is a better mechanism than charity for helping folks in need. Or do you?

Re: Left Coast/Right Coast #11: Secretly Reasonable
I finally happened to catch this episode, and one of the issues surrounding North Korea caught my attention. There was discussion between Kaus and Rubin in that it's in China's interests for a stable NK, and that a collapsed regime would send hundreds of thousands of refugees into China.
I think you both have this wrong. They wouldn't flee north; they would flee south. There's nothing north of North Korea except the same, or worse, as many North Koreans have discovered who have fled north - into slavery. Which is why I agree that information about the real world that penetrates into North Korea is the biggest lever we have. The more the people of North Korea know the reality of freedom and prosperity that is denied them by people with guns, the more likely they will be to resist the regime, and more likely to seek what every human being deserves - liberty.
