Gary-Johnson

Politico is reporting that former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson will be dropping his bid for the GOP nomination to go for the Libertarian nomination:

The former two-term New Mexico governor, whose campaign for the GOP nomination never caught fire, will make the announcement at a press conference in Santa Fe on Dec. 28. Johnson state directors will be informed of his plans on a campaign conference call Tuesday night, a Johnson campaign source told POLITICO. ...

Johnson’s view mirror Paul’s, though he is more hands-off on social issues, opposing government restrictions on abortion. Like Paul, he opposes all drug laws and the nation’s participation in overseas efforts to stop cultivation of coca and poppy plants.

Now, Johnson will seek the Libertarian nod at the party’s national convention in Las Vegas in May. Party officials said last month that they are holding out hope that Paul and former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura would contend for their nomination, though Paul is now the GOP front-runner in Iowa and Ventura is vacationing at his home in Mexico, where he does not have a telephone or an Internet connection.

As a small 'l' libertarian, I'd just like to remind folks that most libertarians are not members of the Libertarian Party (sort of like how most Tea Partiers probably don't even know there are Tea Party organizations that claim to represent them).

It will be interesting to see how this effects the national race, should Johnson get the nomination. In New Mexico, for instance, he was quite popular. That could help Obama win the state.

Member Fred Cole wrote a persuasive and even-handed case for Gary Johnson earlier this month.

That is spectacularly delusional.

Mollie, nothing, I repeat, nothing, is as fun as reading Politico's analysis of the electoral "tea leaves."

I'm shocked, shocked, I say, that Politico failed to provide a link to support the claim.

I'm certain that there is some poll... somewhere... to back that patently ludicrous assertion.

I love campaign season.

Good for him. If Ron Paul wins Iowa and is blown off and up like Tim Carney predicts, let's see how excited libertarian-leaning candidates will be to put their faith in the GOP again. My state's deep blue, so I'll be voting LP, and I hope a lot of you in the same situation do as well. This is why we can't have nice things.

My second choice for VP is Gov. Martinez. I'm not sure if Johnson would make that a better or worse choice. Guess I need to read up some more on NM politics. Anyone on Ricochet who could recommend a place to start?

If Ron Paul wins Iowa, I'll send you $500.

If he doesn't, I want $100.

Deal?

RealClearPolitics average has Paul up +1.4. The two most recent polls have him as the front runner +3 and +6.

Susanna Martinez is definitely a dark horse for VP, although I hope the GOP doesn't pluck her from the vine before she's ripe like they did with a certain other GOP governor

That would work fine, though there are ways we could make it more interesting and less subject to federal reserve inflation:

1) Win - I choose your avatar for a week; lose - you choose mine (SFW)

2) Win - I choose the song you sing, record, and post in member feed; lose - you choose mine

3) Still thinking, open to suggestions...

I'm a New Mexico resident, so let me save you some time.  Governor Martinez was elected because the previous administration of Bill Richardson was seen as corrupt (he's finally about to be indicted).  The Dems decided to nominate his lieutenant governor who was guilty of nothing except close association with the utterly corrupt Richardson.  Martinez was nothing more than a DA from a backwater district (and that's saying something in a backwater like New Mexico).  She has little to show in her first legislative session.  She couldn't even get driver's licenses for illegals revoked.  There is nothing in her resume or experience to suggest she's ready for higher office.

I wouldn't ever subject the fine folks of Ricochet (yourself included) to a song sung aloud by me.

Nobody deserves that.

Shouldn't Dr Paul be running as a Libertarian, rather than a Republican?

Very disappointing -- the Republican Party needs more Governor Johnsons, not fewer -- though I can hardly blame him for feeling jilted.

Agreed. I worry about a party where a popular and successful former governor such as Johnson feels unwelcome.

Right. He's an ancient relic who governed a tiny state fifteen years ago.

Let's all roll out the Red Carpet.

Better to roll out the red carpet for...

-A former Speaker of the House who was booted last century?

-A former one term governor who instituted an individual mandate?

-A septuagenarian congressman from south Texas?

-A three term congresswoman with no other experience?

-A homophobic senator who lost in a landslide?

Cute. So this is a Johnson-as-the-hero thread?

I have a couple of questions:

Who's the "homophobic senator?"  Is that Santorum?

Can you support that claim? Does he fear gays? Do you have any evidence?

Why is it that (big L) Libertarians routinely pretend that their policies are popular?

Reality check:

Ron Paul will not win Iowa. Gary Johnson will not win Iowa. Ralph Nader will not win Iowa.
