Do You Need Another Reason to Love Chicago Politics?
We may have just breached February, but I'm pretty sure that we've already encountered the political quote of the year.
Though she's been overshadowed by Rahm Emanuel, some of you may recall that Carol Moseley Braun -- the former U.S. Senator, Ambassador to New Zealand, and longshot 2004 presidential candidate -- is also running for mayor of the Second City. That candidacy will be worth it if for no other reason than for generating the quote that the Chicago Tribune reports escaped Moseley Braun's lips at a candidate forum (in a church, no less) on Sunday, when she was being challenged by obscure candidate Patricia Watkins:
The latest issue began Sunday at a candidate forum at Trinity United Church of Christ after Watkins criticized Braun as being "missing in action" on Chicago issues since losing her bid for re-election to the U.S. Senate in 1998.
"Patricia, the reason you didn't know where I was for the last 20 years is because you were strung out on crack," Braun said. "I was not strung out on crack. I don't have a record."
There are a lot of former Marion Barry opponents who are kicking themselves right now for not coming up with this.

I can remember during her presidential run CMB was asked what her college major was and she did not know and she would have to get back with them on that. I'll giver her props on the crackhead remark, but I think she is quite objectively a dim wit.

Watkins should have fired back by saying she saw Braun on the nod from smack just before the meeting. It doesn't matter in Chicago if it's true or not. Look at Obama's background -- if you can penetrate the deceptions and general murkiness. It's so thick the MSM never even tried.

But even if you showed video of Watkins and Braun sharing a crack pipe together, they'd still pull in plenty of Chicago votes!
I think it was a Chicago Board of Ed or City Council meeting where a board member wouldn't leave the room because a vote would be taken without her, so she had fellow members gather round her as she urinated into a bucket. (She's a lady, afterall.) Does anyone remember that? Was it Chicago?

From all reports, the Trinity United church puts on quite the lively service.

If her tax returns are any indication, Carol is in deep financial trouble. She's desperate. She won't win the primary (in Chicago the Democratic primary is the only election that matters), but if she generates enough support she can negotiate for, and get, a lucrative job with the city.
The only reason she may get away with this without being hounded out of the race is the candidate she slandered is also a black woman. Imagine if Rahm said the same thing.

The Chi-trib report states that Braun lost a brother to drug abuse and promises to "tackle the issue as mayor."
Well thank goodness! It's about time!
