Stand Up For Religious Freedom: Jacksonville
Noon today. Downtown Jacksonville (Florida). 250 people, maybe 300—this with no advance media, print or broadcast, that I could find. I would not have heard of it myself, except for a link I followed in Mollie’s post of the other day.
A crowd that is calm, courteous, and resolute. Determined. Priests and nuns and folks, and a sense of injury in the air.
No counter-demonstrators.
Speakers who say the things that are expected, say them well, and the crowd cheers and waves flags and posters. After the last prayer, the closing prayer, the organizer, pictured above, says this:
“We all know that there are many more who feel the same way we do. Tell your friends. Please tell your friends.”

Re: Stand Up For Religious Freedom: Jacksonville
I can say the same thing for Providence, RI where about 100 people gathered...except we did have some counter-protesters (just 10 or 15). What was most impressive, to me, was the number of people who applauded our cause as they drove by.
Still, it remains to be seen if mainstream media will acknowledge it!

I attended the rally in Chicago today. Accord to a police officer with whom I chatted for a few minutes, he estimated 1,200. And it was pouring rain.

Re: Stand Up For Religious Freedom: Jacksonville
We attended the rally in Portland Oregon. Again, we would not have even known about it if it hadn't been for Molly. There were over 200 people there. Most of the passing traffic was supportive.
For Portland Oregon 200 - 250 people at such an event is wonderful.

My admiration and thanks to all who made the effort to attend any of these rallies. I had no word of anything like this in the SF Bay area. Appreciate your posting and photos, Henry!

There has been a total media blackout. Anybody see any story, post the link.

Re: Stand Up For Religious Freedom: Jacksonville
"Total media blackout" --what are you talking about? The media have been all over the Trayvon Martin story, with the President and Jesse Jackson and a host of others jumping in. . .
Oh, wait.

Re: Stand Up For Religious Freedom: Jacksonville
Back in the day, bishops needed the help --the connivance-- of the authorities to hide their pedophiles. Is it an unexpected benefit of the Scandal, that the days of the symbiotic --or mutually parasitic-- relationship between churchmen and politicians is past? Bishops all over the country seem to be finding their spines, and politicians their fangs. I used to think we were headed for a Babylonian captivity. But perhaps we are rather emerging from one.

I attended the rally in Dallas, TX. I heard about it in advance on this site. Others I talked to there learned of the rally from Catholic Radio. I estimate 1100 attended. It was reported in a local TV news broadcast last night. A local talk radio host played emcee to 3 speakers, two of them local preachers.

One of my sisters attended this one in Cleveland. Bishop Lennon quotes a pertinent letter from Thomas Jefferson to the Ursuline Sisters: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=VXSpp4wRKqE

Re: Stand Up For Religious Freedom: Jacksonville
We had a large crowd (my husband thinks more than two hundred) in the small town of Goshen, New York. Our signs got lots of honks, thumbs up and smiles. All five speakers were good. Colleen Boland Toder was phenomenal. For the first time in three years, we felt like free citizens.

Steve tried to go to the one that was announced in Austin. He couldn't find anybody.
Austin slackers: even the Republicans don't do political events on a sunny Friday afternoon when Barton Springs is open.

Re: Stand Up For Religious Freedom: Jacksonville
The DC rally in front of HHS drew, I'd say, somewhere around 300 to 500. Lovely day. Energetic crowd. Lots of moms with lots of kids. Hoorah and Oorah for the moms!!
Re: Stand Up For Religious Freedom: Jacksonville
I was there, too! I'll post some pictures once I can figure out the technology. Love this post, Henry!

Re: Stand Up For Religious Freedom: Jacksonville
The event in Omaha was mentioned in the local paper. Paper mentioned a crowd of around 1,000, so it had to be at least that large.
The Archbishop was one of five speakers.

Re: Stand Up For Religious Freedom: Jacksonville
Many of Reno's 200 participants were familiar faces to each other. Although the rally took place at noon on a working day, there should have been some representation from the Diocesan bureaucracy besides the Bishop. There was not. The chancery is about 5 blocks from the site. While it is the most encouraging sign we have seen in a long time that the USCCB plans to break from the Bernardin 40 year tradition of liberal Catholic collaboration with the Democratic Party, we need to see an ongoing effort across the board to support Cardinal Dolan's leadership. The media was definitely there and reporting the event.

Re: Stand Up For Religious Freedom: Jacksonville
Henry -- did you take all those pictures? They are fantastic -- I love the black and white images, the closeups, the framing of your shots. The young girl with the bullhorn. The couple standing together, the woman behind the man, with the flag. Beautiful. I also, as you doubtless know, love the subject matter. Thanks for posting!
