Why did I only just see this in the news?

Five members of an Israeli  family were killed Friday night when a suspected terrorist broke into their home in the West Bank settlement of Itamar and stabbed them all to death.

According to police, the suspect broke into the house armed with a knife and stabbed the mother, father and three children, aged 11, three and a three-month-old baby.

I'll tell you why: Because when settlers are killed, the world thinks, "That's just what they deserved. It's not news." Even when the victims are three children aged 11, 3, and a 3-month baby.

If only they'd had the good sense to be Mexicans who'd settled in the U.S. . . .

BBC has a headline in quotation marks and a short report- otherwise no sign of coverage in Irish or British media. It's still very early here and they may be overwhelmed by events in Japan. The next few hours will tell.

I don't give a damn how bigoted it makes me, I've got to say it.

These people are animals.

Religion of peace, my hairy white buttocks.

And what do you say to the world's non-Muslims who don't think this is particularly important, because you know, "They were settlers?" Trust me, it's not just Muslims who find it a fitting punishment for the crime of being a three-month-old settler.

The hatred and bloodlust that drives these killers is incomprehensible. It boils up from the core of their being. Sheer evil. So many so-called progressives do not believe that human beings are ever really wicked. They see murderers like this as traumatized victims -- kind of an "insanity" defense.

Meanwhile, One reason for the sparse reporting (especially sympathetic reporting) may be that it is Shabbat and the pro-settler voices -- most of whom  are carefully observant -- who would normally be posting this and making sure it's seen probably won't do anything until sundown today.

Pretty much the same thing, but substituting an insult to fit the context for the "religion of peace" bit.

10 am, not a word on the websites of the main Irish media, including the Irish Times, which carries negative stories about Israel just about daily. In the UK, the Guardian has a cursory AP Report. The Independent headline: "Israeli Settler Family Stabbed", above a short piece that neglects to mention the ages of the child victims. How predictable it all is.

I just phoned the Website News Department of RTE, the Irish national public service broadcaster. They are aware of the story, they say they are very busy with the Japanese story. They seem to have "weekend" staff levels.I pointed out they are carrying stories from yesterday that are no longer newsworthy. The man I spoke to was very polite and said they will get around to it later. I mentioned that this was a very important matter for supporters of Israel and that it was important that our media cover it. I'll keep an eye on the website for developments.

Palestinian PM condemns settler murders

Updated: 10:54, Saturday, 12 March 2011

Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad has condemned the murder of a Jewish settler family in the West Bank by presumed Palestinian attackers.

1 of 1 Salam Fayyad - Condemned attack

Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad has condemned the murder of a Jewish settler family in the West Bank by presumed Palestinian attackers.

'We clearly and firmly condemn all forms of violence, and I condemn what happened last night in (the settlement of) Itamar, just as I condemn the crimes against Palestinians,' Fayyad said in the West Bank town of Bethlehem.

A settler couple and three of their children were stabbed to death in their beds.

Two children were spared and a third, a girl of 10, discovered the massacre when she arrived home and alerted neighbours.

Of course they would give a Palestinian perspective, and omit the ages of the children!

Yes but all of these murders of Israeli citizens, including the murder of children, should not be used in any way to justify the building of apartments by the Israelis.  That would be an outrageous overreaction . . . .

Meanwhile, universities in the US and throughout the Western world are playing host to something called "Israeli Apartheid Week." See my post fourteen days of vileness.

Usually when the Palestinian spokespeople condemn this kind of thing, they say specifically that they are condemning it because it hurts the Palestinain image or cause or whatever.  It is rare when they say it's bad just because it's bad.

That's only a part of it.

The bigger part is that this event does not fit the narrative of the noble Palestinian people peacefully resisting the Israeli bootheel on their throats.

The narrative says that Israel is an apartheid state.  It harms the narrative to cover a story of Palestinian terrorists murdering a family in their sleep, in an attempt to render the West Bank Judenrein.

Claire, I don't know if the headline is yours or not, but it should be "killed in their home," not "homes."

The Wall Street Journal has an article up on it...

Tel Aviv – Five family members were stabbed to death at home late Friday evening by one or more Palestinians who infiltrated the West Bank Jewish settlement of Itamar, Israeli military officers said.

... as does The New York Times:

HAWARA, West Bank — The Israeli military was searching on Saturday for a Palestinian intruder or intruders it said stabbed to death five members of an Israeli family, including three children, in their home in the West Bank settlement of Itamar late Friday night.

Stuart, You can always rely on the Telegraph. It's the Independent and the Guardian that need to be watched.
