So after last night, the Obama rage machine was in full effect, bringing these Samuel Butler lines from Hudibras to mind:

You wound, like Parthians, while you fly,
And kill with a retreating eye.

Only this time, it wasn't a kill.  It was more of a tantrum.

If you need any further evidence of Obama's morale collapse today, look no further than his Denver rally speech.  Small, defensive and ugly...even though he was back in the soft embrace and cool glow of the teleprompter.  One fairly liberal reporter there today emailed me, "I used to write off you guys making TelePrompTer jokes, but the contrast..."

The response to last night's epic beatdown was a pathetic farrago of excuses, rationalizations, binge drinking (oh, I hear things), fantasyland bank-shot reasoning of why Obama meant to tank it and finally -- hilariously --  Dr. Albert Von Gore's spin that it was altitude sickness.

Mitt Romney hasn't won two days in a row in weeks.  Something's happening, and you can see it in Obama's face. Last night's win was remarkable. The flailing of Obama's campaign today is moreso.

Obama raised 150 Million bucks in September.  He's still the favorite.

But, for the first time in a while, I like our chances.

He looked genuinely amused and in high spirits after humiliating himself last night. The level of narcissism and arrogance is simply breathtaking.

The Denver rally speech proves that he didn't learn anything from last night.  He sounds small, arrogant, peevish and ungracious.

It's a wonder to me that anyone ever thought he was likeable.

... and, anagrammatically, morose.

I was thrilled with Romney's debate performance last night after finally seeing it on DVR. I was one of his 2-per-second donors this evening. I was glad to see Obama exposed as the empty suit he has always been.

Just a question...should we pretend that Obama is not still the favorite and that he didn't raise 150 mil in September?

No. Lets acknowledge both of those things and, instead, pretend that he won a dominating victory in the debate last night.

If we're going to fantasize, let's go big.

Obama is merely a reflection of the countenance of a large part of the electorate.

Isn't it?  It's astounding.

Wmartin, my point was that we need not pretend anything. Facts are facts, to be sure. But the fact that Obama collected $150M is, by itself, irrelevant.  Of far greater interest would be comparative current account balances. And, as important as even those figures might be, they are not determinative.   It is meaningless.

My point was that we can know from history that polls taken at this stage of the game are essentially meaningless. In fact, they are often worse than meaningless because they may be propaganda targeting dupes to discourage they from involvement or even voting.   It is meaningless.

there is only one thing that is important at this point: doing the work of a candidate, or an advocate if you are not the candidate. Getting the job done is the only thing.  Pretending anything is pointless and foolish.  Having put his hand to the plow, this is not the time to look back or get distracted.

Gore's comment was just priceless, wasn't it?  On the binge drinking, call me, OK?  ;-)

Good. The less he "learns" from last night the less likely he is to surprise us in the second debate. He's already lowered standards so much that not drooling on the moderator is going to be spun as a victory anyway.

I saw no evidence from the Denver speech that he'd learned nothing from the debate last night. What I saw was a deflection of the loss back to Romney, much as a child on the playground might yell 'you're a cheater!' before stomping away from a losing game. It's classic Obama, the crowd was eating it up, but that does not mean he won't be better prepared next time. Assuming otherwise is simply dangerous.

There's a name we had in my nighborhood for a man who, face to face with his opponent, acts meek and cowers yet gets all bragadocious the next day in friendly surroundings w/o the chance of a counterpunch.

I can't say the actual name we used due to CoC, but let's just say it's very close to wuss!
