Odalisque Naked from Waist Up

This is apparently the suggestion of the (female) Kuwaiti activist Salwa al-Mutairi. Why?

To protect men from corruption, and to prevent children from falling into the abyss of adultery.

Apparently

For every good man in our religion, the only solution for him--when forbidden women come around, if he's tempted to sin... is for him to purchase sex slaves.

(Apparently, the idea that a man might just resist the temptation when "forbidden women" come around is too namby-pamby to even be thinkable.)

Her proposal's even mutfti-approved! As the mufti puts it:

With the law of sex slaves, there must be a Muslim nation at war with a Christian nation, or a nation... not of the religion of Islam. And there must be prisoners of war...

Sex slaves are not forbidden by Islam. On the contrary, sex slaves are under a different law than the free woman. The free woman must be completely covered except for her face and hands. But the sex slave can be naked from the waist up.

So who does Salwa think these lucky prisoners of war should be? Russian babes between the ages of 15 and 25.

Well, at least she's picked a demographic likely to look good naked from the waist up.

I want to laugh, but I'm really not sure if I can. I've seen theological gymnastics before, but this takes the gold. Let me see if I have this straight: it's not sin or adultery if the woman is a slave from a nation Muslim's are at war with. Isn't that pretty much every non-Muslim nation? Is the entire religion driven by sex?

Good question. Of course, Freud would say that everything's driven by sex, but these fellas do seem to be unusually bad at the whole sublimation thing.

Kenneth. So calm. I am surprised.

I had figured your reaction would be to want to strangle ol' Salwa here with her own niqab.

That's peachy for your wealthy good men, but where's the love for the stalwart poor fellows?

Mayhaps Salwa should consider folding price controls, or better yet, a sex-slave subsidy into her proposal.

Just so you know, I used your grandma's line on my kids today. They looked seriously confused.

Well, I saw the whole video a few days ago.  I thought it was a laugh riot.

Pity.  Your kids are probably going to schools that ban dodgeball.  Dodgeball is one of the greatest character-builders of all time.

Given their usual lack of response to real-life oppression of women, perhaps they should change their name to LATER.

Ahmed comes home from a rough day at the goat herd, and Fatima is in one of her moods. You know how women are, especially in the middle east.

Fatima: Ahmed, it's either me or the goat. You decide.

Ahmed: How do you feel about a sex slave?

Fatima: Is she Catholic?

Ahmed: Not that I know.

Fatima: Can she cook?

Ahmed: We're talkin' sex-slave not scullery maid, Fatima!

Fatima: Can we eat the goat?

Ahmed: Fatima, she's the best goat I ever had!

Fatima: I've seen her in spandex and chaps, she ain't that hot.

Ahmed: But I really like her, Fatima!

Fatima: Well, if you like her now. You'll love her with rice, onions, garlic, ginger, and a side of yogurt.

Sex slaves, huh?  Suddenly, for millions of Christian males, Islam appears in a new light!

Now, where is that copy of the Koran?  Better start memorizing.

It's waiting for him in Paradise.  21 virgins just for him.  All he has to do is slaughter some infidels.

Someday I mean to write something on just this point--on how much the "Islamist problem" is driven by a perverse view of sexuality.

Besides sex slaves, how about child brides, multiple wives, "temporary marriages", honor killings, and the simple fact that the men essentially own the women?

I thought it was 72.  I'll trade a dozen virgins for one who knows what she is doing.

I wish I had the link, but I kid you not.  An Iranian mullah has ruled that you may not eat a goat in the village where it was, um, violated.  It is permissible, however, to sell the goat to a neighboring village for consumption.  Obviously, sharia is more theologically sophisticated than I thought.

Er, er... but I thought the latest scholarship shows that they're not virgins, but "white (or chilled) raisins" of "crystal clarity" -- or perhaps just some lemonade ("chilled drinks")... Right?

And golly, a handful of crystal-clear raisins (crystal-clear, what are they, glass?) or a few cold ones does seem like a rather mingy spread to look forward to in Paradise.

Someday western 'progressives' will wake up to the consequences of the Muslin religion's denigration of women. But it will be too late.

It seems, from a rather cursory glance, that the entire theology is built around how men can have as much sex as they want of almost any variety (excluding homosexual, of course) without the burden of sin or conscience. I've rationalized some of my behavior before, but I've never systematized such rationalizations into an entire theology. As an aside, does the duality of outward piety and brazen lasciviouslness provide some of the draw to Islam? Is it because discontent, hormone filled men can assuage their guilt and be declared pious without having to actually change their sexual behavior that Islam draws people in?

It seems, from a rather cursory glance, that the entire theology is built around how men can have as much sex as they want of almost any variety (excluding homosexual, of course) without the burden of sin or conscience.

My understanding is that the taboo against homosexual acts is not monolithic, either, and some interpretations allow for considerable, uh... leeway.

I believe according to some customs, intimacy with another male is dishonoring pretty much only if you're the one "used as the girl". Moreover, it seems that there are Muslim men out there who don't consider that engaging in homosexual behavior makes them homosexual. (These guys' attitude seems to be that obviously, they'd prefer girls, but they'll use boys instead if that's what's handy -- besides, some of them consider girls unclean, even though girls are presumably what they really want.)

According to these customs, homosexual behavior is less taboo than being homosexual. Sort of the opposite of the old-school Christian view, where it's not your proclivities that matter, but whether and how you act on them.
