I don't have allergies. In fact, I used to strongly suspect that in most cases they were made up by people with personal problems. So of course I have a daughter with a severe nut allergy. She handles it very well and after our initial trip to the emergency room, we've never had a major incident and I pray we never will.

With that said, this video (h/t John Podhoretz) is hilarious (although I should mention it contains a bleeped vulgarity at the end):

And I want to show it to all those Paleo obsessives at my Crossfit gym (and, ok, maybe my husband, too) who act happy when a cookie they've baked with no gluten simply holds together.

Molly,

I recently read an article on the microbiome, which said that some scientists feel that antibiotic usage might be killing off bugs that our bodies need for preventing allergies. One suggestion was that a lack of Heliobacter (the stomach ulcer bug) might result in nut allergies . They seemed to feel that Heliobacter is good for you until about age 37.

I'm sorry I can't remember where I read this, but you might enjoy doing some research on the microbiome. We and our live-in friends are certainly complicated.

God gave us all the greatest disease fighting mechanism in existence.  Our immune system.  No drugs, no antibiotics, no anti-bacterial soaps, don't be too clean, have pets.  Make your immune system do it's job, and you will seldom get colds, flu's and most other illnesses.

The great polio epidemics came about in the early 20th century after the introduction of modern sewage treatment.  Almost every epidemic happened in advanced countries once they cleaned up their sanitation.  Theory is that the baseline immunity from the polio virus was carried in the water, and therefore there was a low incidence of normally occurring polio cases.  After the cleanup of the water systems, that immunity disappeared.

This isn't an argument against sanitation, just a reminder that there is such a thing as too clean.  I, Ray, have traveled to a great many underdeveloped countries, yet, I believe because I do not obsess about cleanliness, I have very rarely been sick from common illnesses.

Linda keeps the same regimen, and she, also, rarely becomes ill.

But we remind ourselves that mortality is real.  No diet or regimen can protect you from a wrong way driver on the freeway.

Sometimes there are great things hidden in the credits - like "Megan Ermelio as Epipen".

Oh, yes. Thanks for this. And I loved the "Epipen" for Eponine as well.

I have the same theory about other "modern" diseases.  Now that we can live longer lives -- into our 80s or 90s -- we can now suffer the wrath of Alzheimer's.  150 years ago, the life expectancy was short enough because of other diseases that very few people lived long enough to suffer from Alzheimers.  Just my theory.

With respect to allergies, my daughter is Celiac and has Crohn's disease-a nasty combination.  Her boy friend makes light of it with Crohn's jokes, such as this:  Referring to her clothes in the dryer, she said:  " do you think my s*** is dry?"  He responded:  "Babe, you have Crohns; I really doubt it."  Gotta find that golden nugget of humor in every lousy situation!

Studies have shown that kids with poor hygeine (essentially not using toilet paper) have very few allergies.

But life expectancies are much shorter for those in th third world.

In sum: hygiene may not be an unalloyed win, but it is a win nonetheless.

The issue isn't hygiene, it is filth.  Filth breeds the bacteria and viruses that even a healthy immune system can be overwhelmed by.

In advanced countries like the US, Australia and Europe, filth is rarely the problem.  It is the lack of strong individual immune systems that is our problem.

Get rid of all those over precautions.  E Coli sounds like a terrible disease, but really, it is nothing more than a case of the sh**s.  Most of the real sufferers either have immune systems compromised by serious other illnesses, or immune systems too under worked to function when needed.  Much the same can be said for salmonella, although it sometimes is more serious.

My great wife has been masterful at cooking for my gluten-free diet for over 30 years now.  I can testify that her chocolate chip cookies hold together very well, at least until I get them in my mouth.

I consider myself healthy, don't take pills, and was overweight 200 lbs and 5'10. I got the book Wheat Belly from Amazon and was amazed at the logic of how this grain, wheat has been genetically modified. Further all the diseases that seemed to go away by eliminating wheat.

Decided on Aug 1 to go "wheat free" and see if I could lose some weight. Lost 30 lbs in 4 months.

The stories in the book about people seeing miraculous health changes for the better, were inspiring.   This doctor was surprised at the changes in peoples health when they gave up wheat. He's got a great blog just Google "Wheat Belly".

All grain and animals have been genetically modified. That is why chickens lay eggs for frequently than every few weeks. And why grain yields are orders of magnitude higher than they were 1,000 years ago.

Wheat surely tastes good, and is amazingly good at meeting the primary purposes of food.

And if you have truly limited resources, you want something that has bang for the buck. Only faulously rich people spend extra money to NOT eat food.
