There’s been a lot of armchair punditry in recent weeks about why exactly Donald Trump has captured so much support in the early days of the race for the Republican presidential nomination. What most of it lacks is any actual research to back it up. That’s not the case with Hoover fellows David Brady and Douglas Rivers, the latter of whom is the chief scientist for the polling firm YouGov PLC. They’ve just finished up an extensive round of polling aimed at deciphering who potential Trump voters are, why they’re drawn to The Donald, and what it means for the rest of the GOP field — and what they’ve discovered seems to violate every rule of thumb about how the Republican primary electorate usually behaves. That was really enlightening for me.
I don’t know whether to be optimistic or not with this. Can Ricochet publish a summary of the numbers. It seems it would be wise for Candidates to avoid alienating Trump supporters, we don’t want them to stay home and they wouldn’t respond to conservative arguments anyway. Moreover they love his political incorrectness and bombast, so just ignore him if they can and if not do as Carly did.

That The Donald is tapping into the populist, “the system is rigged” political claptrap peddled by progressives for decades is a delicious irony.
If I heard right. Trump took half of Ted Cruz’s support. I assume Cruz supporters would be conservative. But according to theses polls “Trump voters are not particular conservative”?

The Republican Party has been trying to pick up moderates and independents for years. Look like it’s working, but not with the Party’s candidate.
It is interesting. I could make a guess that what they share is outspokeness, and Trump’s bombastic personality creates a more cathartic reaction in some, possibly because of his outsideness. I am curious if Trey Gowdy were to announce his candidacy if he would draw the same sector. Most conservative/republicans I know like him a lot because he is sharp and direct, but some are frustrated he hasn’t put Hillary in jail by now. I think it is the more rash/impulsive that love Trump.
Im usually on the bombastic side but Im sitting this trump thing out. Maybe Im evolving? ;-) and maybe not ….
