How Are News Magazines Accepting President Trump?

The Kübler-Ross model lists the stages of grief as Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. To check where in this process the left finds itself, I perused the covers of several news magazines. Here are some results.

Since it took the media about three months to hit Anger, I’m expecting Depression to be a serious concern by fall. Invest in pharmaceutical companies.

Let’s not forget that we have an influential element here in the USA who are Republicans and conservatives that have propagated the idea that Trump is especially vile and therefore fair game. They have effectively shut down avenues for defense of the man.

In what way exactly? It seems to me that many conservative commentators have come to Trump’s defense often since his inauguration – Krauthammer, Tucker Carlson, even Ben Shapiro on occasion and dare I mention it even some of those weaklings at National Review (that, that rag!)

High school bullying. Defenders are ridiculed because Trump is going to appoint his sister to the Supreme Court, he hates Mexicans and called them all rapists and is on record saying something gauche about women etc.

Yes, let’s conveniently ignore some of Mr. Trump’s other outrageous behavior during the primary season – attacking Ted Cruz’s marriage, attacking Cruz’s father, encouraging his supporters “beat the crap” out of hecklers…need I continue? And then there’s the promise to deport 12 million illegals in less than two years that he conveniently vacated once he got the nomination that amazingly some of his diehard supports justified that even Ann Coulter had the good sense to fleetingly groan about because she felt betrayed.

Well I guess this is why we should have elected Hillary because Trump ‘represents’ us and all of our values.

Ah, I’ve so missed this argument – “If you’re not for Trump you must be for Hillary.” Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Just like before in our internal disputes. Now we all ou find ourselves defending him on all kinds of crazy charges even when we don’t want to and would like to focus on the issues – the real issues that face our nation and the world. One simply cannot say “he’s really not so bad” to these people without getting mocked and dismissed. So I say with some sadness, welcome to the club.

You might say, well now it’s really over the top, but I hope you might be able to garner some small retroactive sympathy for his earlier defenders who had a lower tolerance for rampant misinformation and abject demonization, and also perhaps have some introspection on how this Trump hatred got so far off the rails.

How much “rampant misinformation” during the primary season is still debatable since there’s ample video evidence of Trump’s statements, empty promises, conspiracy theory pronouncements and loutish remarks.

I’ve been rather supportive of President Trump because he has tempered his behavior since becoming president. He’s put together a decent cabinet. I like his stance against Iran. I felt good about Nikki Haley’s recent comments about Russia at the UN. I’ve defended Trump’s temporary immigration ban. But do forgive me if my cautious optimism isn’t gushing enthusiasm as yet. Let’s see how the next four years pans out, shall we?

This war may not stop and it’s fracturing our country.

If that is true (and I hope you are wrong), I take solace in knowing it will be over very quickly because only one side is armed.

I’m not saying it’s a conspiracy, or that National Review and others are absent because of a new algorithm, but it sure seems like it.

There are other search engines and even search aggregators.

    Arahant

could you do a post on that?

Why don’t you do a bleg post? Ask what search engines or tools people use to get around Google’s prejudices.

I guess I’m not talking about you then, or those you cited. I hesitate to get into this territory in this environment of Ricochet and on Jon Gabriel’s post, so I’ll not engage. Edit: ( taking that back after reading your post more closely…stay tuned) The deed is done. We are all stuck with him either way. But we are also stuck with the vitriol that was launched and fostered by many conservatives and they shut down debate on the subject of “maybe he’s not so bad” and I blame them for that. I blame certain  Nevers who remain sniping at every little thing.  I may well be trashing him a year from now myself (although I still have to remember HRC as the alternative) But America made it’s choice and it was the better one for sure.

There are things he does I don’t like, but in this environment I’m not going to pile on. When that’s interpreted by so many as me being some acolyte, some dupe or some idiot,  then yes, I get pretty upset at them.

I didn’t realize there still were news magazines.  I thought they’d all gone the way of Newsweek.

Oh, don’t ever, ever make that mistake. Once the Left gets a taste for blood, they’ll spill rivers of it, patting themselves on their backs for their virtue all along the way, often eating their own as one can never be pure enough for the Revolution. See: the French Revolution, the Bolshevik Revolution, the Spanish Civil War, Stalin’s show trials and purges, Korea, the Khmer Rouge, the Cultural Revolution in China, etc etc etc. Liberals may not know a rifle sight from a rat’s *** right now, but they can learn very, very quickly. And when they do…

The current crop seems to have no problem with minor weapons, such as pepper spray and clubs, for instance. Given the chance, the guns and bombs will come out once more.

My Hispanic Hillary voting wife was called a white supremacist on Facebook because we (she) goes to a mainstream baptist church.  The soft left is already being destroyed by the hard left.

Der Spiegel’s cover is simply loathsome; equating the President with jihadi murderers is beyond disgusting. This, from a country that not so very long ago in historical terms, would have been burning that magazine (h/t @vthek).

You will be happy to know that a non-trivial portion of the German public has been rightly outraged by Der Spiegel’s revolting cover and has told the editors so in quite direct language.

We can’t be too offended by a provocative media. Don’t buy the magazine. There are plenty of others. It can be a small leap from this kind of outrage to someone calling for censorship.

The Left are like J.K.Rowling’s Dementors: they’ve succeeded in sucking all the joy out of this stunning political success for our side. I’m becoming consumed with a black hatred for them.

Their idiocy is the best gift they could possibly have given to Trump, and its done much to heal the bitter divide within the anti-Left coalition; I hope they stick with it for awhile longer.

Hmm.  Doesn’t seem to have healed the rift here in Ricochet.

Bild and Cicero have been rather pro-Trump. So has Die Welt about half of the time. This is a promising development.

The populist anti-immigrant party (AfD) has it’s own version of Der Spiegel’s cover. That’s the German constitution in one hand and the Islamic sword in the other.

I have decided that all these covers cheapen journalism.  Further self inflicted harm to themselves, not Trump.
