How Are News Magazines Accepting President Trump?

The Kübler-Ross model lists the stages of grief as Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. To check where in this process the left finds itself, I perused the covers of several news magazines. Here are some results.

Since it took the media about three months to hit Anger, I’m expecting Depression to be a serious concern by fall. Invest in pharmaceutical companies.

Clearly, they are permanently stuck in denial, since they are constantly surprised when he does things that he specifically campaigned on.

When Goldwater gave his convention acceptance speech, one Republican exclaimed, “My God, he’s going to run as Barry Goldwater!”

Today, the media is saying, “My God, he’s going to lead as Donald Trump!”

Village is a Dublin-based rag FWIW.

For some reason, the Bannon cover reminds me of the controversial OJ “darkened skin” Newsweek cover.

Der Spiegel’s cover is simply loathsome; equating the President with jihadi murderers is beyond disgusting.  This, from a country that not so very long ago in historical terms, would have been burning that magazine (h/t @vthek).

The left has now officially destroyed Emma Lazarus’ S of L sonnet for me.  And this from many who are embarrassed by patriotism.

This is the equivalent of a preadolescent temper tantrum. The left is infantilizing itself. How long this stupidity will go on is anyone’s guess. At some point, though, an adult will need to step forward among the Democrats and call things to order. The problem for now is that those who are in leadership are enjoying this. They are reliving their lives from the 60s and 70s when they were protesting the Vietnam War and the Johnson and Nixon administrations. They don’t realize how idiotic they look. This too will pass.

I am crying looking at these pictures.  I wish I could see a funny side, I wish I could be confident that it will pass–but I can’t.  The virulent hatred on the Left, persisting this long after the election when usually people are happy to be done with politics for a while, is not like anything I can remember.  That New Yorker cover is heartbreaking.  How must Trump feel, after he has done so much for the city?

I’m truly afraid he will be killed

The Left are like J.K.Rowling’s Dementors: they’ve succeeded in sucking all the joy out of this stunning political success for our side.   I’m becoming consumed with a black hatred for them.

Are there any conservatives left who still read/subscribe to The New Yorker? I stuck out the David Remnick era for awhile, but, as it became increasingly more politicized, I dropped it several years ago.  My impression is that it’s gotten even worse, and I wonder if it ever crosses Remnick’s mind that, for so many, he’s ruined what was once (and for quite a long time) a great magazine–in fact, an institution.

These are so classless. And Der Speigel should just go sit down and close its door and shut up. As if they get to gripe about crummy leaders. The New Yorker clearly has no clue about anything beyond New York, huh?

I thought of that point, too. Seriously? Isn’t this a threat? Should the Secret Service investigate?

I guess it really is just so inconceivable that an elected official would do what they said they’d do in their campaign, that the Professional BSers have had their minds blown.

I find it hard to watch any news on TV anymore. It is just constant TURD.

And it is not just the left. Jay Nordlinger and John Podhoretz and the boys on the Commentary podcast just constantly melt down with everything President Trump does.

As was once declared here, they are becoming boring, repetitive, and tense.

We’ve got a long way to go people, let Trump be the obnoxious boor that he is and let his Cabinet get things done.

Only if you let them.  I just enjoy it more and more every day.  The more infantile they act, the more they repel the vast majority of normal folk out there.

I never knew that Der Spiegel could be so subtle. As far as Time is concerned the artwork is pretty good, I’m sure that their two readers appreciate it, and that’s not counting the kudo’s from their parents. Harpers and the New Yorker were once worth reading at one time, sadly that is no longer the case.

Even I am getting offended at some of this coverage – especially that like Der Spiegel. Maybe National Review should run a cover of Merkel driving a truck into a crowd of people.

My impression is that it’s gotten even worse, and I wonder if it ever crosses Remnick’s mind that, for so many, he’s ruined what was once (and for quite a long time) a great magazine–in fact, an institution.

When I was a teenager in the Pocono mountains, The New Yorker was the coolest thing ever (really just about the ONLY remotely cool thing!)  Glossy pages! The special font! The cover art! The cartoons!  The poetry! ( At 15, I actually submitted a poem of mine)  It was an airy, witty missive from the sophisticated urban wonderland I imagined Manhattan to be.The delicate illusion (of blessed memory) was shattered the first time I saw actual photography on the cover.   So no–I haven’t subscribed for years, either.

But I do see the covers almost every week since I share a mailbox with a subscriber.  The mean-spirited mockery of Trump was exceeded only by a  truly disgusting cover cartoon on the London Times Literary Supplement this summer, which caricatured Trump as a giant, tantrum-throwing, diaper wearing toddler.

Like some P. G. Wodehouse character, I “wrote to the Times” about it. I told them Trump was going to win; it would be just like Brexit.   They didn’t publish my Email but they did send me a nice personal note saying they were sorry I was disappointed .

i was right! But the TLS is still at it.  An article this week called “Old Glory” ( that’s “old” in the sense of “outmoded”)  about Trump’s accession ends:

” And it doesn’t seem at all clear how we’ll cope with what the untrained, pushing cosmopolitan orphans {that’s us Americans!} wrought: a great world disorder, which has finally resulted in the proximity of a volatile Twitter troll, cocksure in manner but not too sure in his morality, to thermonuclear bombs.”

    “Untrained”? “Pushing”?

Exactly what have these bozos got to feel superior to us about?  And  how would they like it if we rudely maligned and caricatured their PM or their precious royals?

And WTF do they know about Trump’s “morality”?

But what can we expect when our own journalistic elites (a la The New Yorker) display such SELF-contempt?

I wonder if the CoC will permit me to extend to the Erstwhile Empire, our defeated colonial rulers,  a heartfelt

    BUGGER OFF!!

I think the Village magazine knows the truth: It is always the Left doing the shooting. Always. Village is trying to stir one of their freaks up enough to do it, and I think everyone at that magazine should be sentenced to long terms in prison.
