Flyover Country, Episode 63 – Sal Padula and your last update before … tuesday
This is your last episode of Flyover Country before … ? Before what? That’s a good question, and your guess is as good as ours.
What can you expect from a podcast the day before an election like this one? Well, we’ve got Sal Padula for you, so prepare to have those expectations met … and more!
We had a lot of fun. Join us!

Can this URL be salvaged?
Yes, it happens every week. I just have to wait for an editor to come in and fix it for me. Has something to do with permissions…
In the meantime, you can go to http://www.soundcloud.com/flyoverpodcast
It’s great to have FC back! I was beginning to fear it wasn’t going to happen again!
It has been really hard to find the motivation, lately.
We started the podcast and all kind of agreed… “we want to do a podcast, but we just don’t want to talk about politics right now.” This whole thing is discouraging and maddening at the same time. Ultimately, we can’t say much except that there isn’t any good outcome for Tomorrow. I’d be half inclined to just sit at home with a bottle of whiskey, but it’s a Tuesday night! Maybe we need to start having elections on Fridays, so we can at least go out and have some fun while the world burns.
(p.s. I didn’t want to start the podcast as slowly as we actually did, so I popped into the actual conversation and skipped the leadup. Stick around after the closing song if you want to hear us read fan-mail … complete with all the awkward silences.)
Hey, I disagreed with Wickard V. Filburn!
I thought I was number four….
It’s better than being #2?
Four may have been a slight understatement, but I have to say I don’t think the substantive ruling in Wickard is all that unpopular on the right. I remember two threads in the last year that illustrate this point. One concerned the proposed federal ban on late-term abortion, the other a proposed bill which would have required states to grant reciprocity to concealed carry permits granted by other states.
Power of the purse works better when used over individual appropriations bills than on an all or nothing CR basis.
Yup. I’m still far from convinced that there was any individual or combination of appropriations that could successfully been used to repeal the ACA.
ACA is the Cthulhu of legislation…tentacles into everything.
Wa gun laws are going in the crapper now that they’re being restricted a bit at a time by initiative each election.
I agree 100%, Ryan. If Trump were running as a Democrat not a single person on the right would even consider defending the sludge that comes out of his mouth.
I agree too but I’m all in for Susan Quinn’s reconciliation.
Unlistenable guys. Come back in 10 years after you have, what I hope, is some increased wisdom. You have nothing to say.
Good show guys, thanks!
:) In 10 years, we will be such bastions of wisdom that we’ll also be able to give you all the answers in under 30 minutes.
I’d encourage you to listen to more episodes. This election season has us all at a loss. It sounds like we were able to adequately convey that confusion! On the plus side, we’re not going around making a bunch of predictions that will result in us looking foolish within the week, right?
Interestingly, though, Washington still remains rather gun friendly. It’s shocking, and it will not likely last, but it’s good while it does.
Quinnie, may I ask: Are you pro-Trump? If so, how long have you been supporting him?
Last episode, we had Robert McReynolds on the podcast, and he presented what we thought were some very good thoughts from the perspective of a Trump voter.
Hugs and kisses back at you, Quinnie.
As you know, I love getting fan mail (even hate mail) as much as the next guy, but when one’s commenting is, well, this predictable:
Ahem, and Ahem, and Ahem (I stopped at 3, but you get the picture),
I am inclined to question that person’s objectivity.
We’ve been pretty fair to Trump, all things considered. If your expectation is unadulterated praise, simply because he is the nominee, I think you’re missing out on a big part of what conservatism stands for.
(I’ll also point out that Mr. Nordlinger is at least 10 years older than me. Seems I’m destined to jump straight from youthful ignorance straight to moral preening… and blithering nothing … and immaturity. If I don’t “get a grip” and hop on the Trump-train, that is.)
Translation: “I don’t like what you’re saying. How dare you invade my safe space.”
No let us invade Trump people’s safe space and argue with them. That is the best for everyone.
We sat up late last night watching the election and I JUST got time to listen to the podcast today. I tried to ask how you were doing on Messenger @ryanm but you weren’t online. Anyways, my prediction was TOTALLY opposite. I had thought Trump would win popular but lose electoral. I know votes are still coming in (according to Google), but it looks like she’ll take the popular vote.
I have had literally The Best Morning Ever. I had intended to take a FB break for a few days, but with Chris Matthews’s woeful attempt to keep the pouting out of his voice last night, I just HAD to get on Facebook to see the reaction of my liberal friends. I wasn’t disappointed. It has continued on this morning, with one of my liberal co-workers literally crying at her desk about it as she had JUST found out as well as a (ultra liberal hail-to-Mother-Gaia environmentalist) co-worker who was more surly than usual. I’ve been trying to tamper my glee but man, it’s so hard to do that even Terry’s gloom and doom can’t bring me down. Sorry, I’ll admit I’m one of those stick-it-to-the-left types.
Glee is perfectly appropriate! I am happy to be wrong, in this case. I hope I’m wrong about much more than just the election, though…

Really?…
I made it through 15 seconds of that, Midge.
So glad that is my only exposure to “Glee.”
Haha! I know!
