Winning the Lottery of Life - Charles C. W. Cooke on Choosing America

What does America look like through the eyes of someone who chose to become an American? Charles C. W. Cooke joins The Dave Carter Show for a conversation about his lifelong fascination with the United States—from childhood visits to Disney World and the American Southwest to the journey that culminated in his taking the oath of citizenship in 2018. Along the way, Charles reflects on what James Madison might make of the republic in 2026 and why the survival of both the country and its Constitution might surprise him more than some of today's political controversies. The conversation turns to America's perpetual outrage cycle and the gulf between the controversies consuming political and media obsessives and the concerns of ordinary Americans. Charles argues for stepping away from the 24-hour torrent long enough to regain perspective, touching on everything from current arguments over men competing in women's sports to the remarkable expansion of federal power. And when offered an afternoon with any figure in history, his choice is Winston Churchill.

Doing The Right Something

With a catastrophic tragedy in the news, the Ricochet mood is a bit more serious; but that doesn't mean bad policy or sentimental grandstanding are appropriate courses of action. That's why this week, we've invited a Second Amendment expert and parent on to the show. The one and only Charles C.W. Cooke. He fields questions on the horror in Uvalde, the reaction from politicians and the press; the DPS, and a few potential resolutions to hopefully prevent so many of these terrible acts of violence. Peter and James also talk about the collapse of civic and moral norms that get far too little attention when these senseless crimes are discussed. And as promised, for those interested in Charles's piece on the constitutional history of the Second Amendment, here's the link: https://www.nationalreview.com/magazine/2018/08/27/the-truth-about-the-second-amendment/

A Fabulous Fourth

To kick off a great Fourth of July Weekend we'll need firecrackers, but, of course, only with adult supervision. For the former, we've got John Yoo filling in for Rob and Charles C.W. Cooke as our first guest - for the latter, Mr. Bill McGurn. To start, Peter and James get to pick Yoo's brain on a few of the recent Supreme Court decisions along with Bill Cosby's release. Then Charlie gives an ode to the only country on Earth that lets you move here and consider yourself a full member. Lastly, Bill fills us in on his saintly godson, Jimmy Lai, and his concerns for the future of Hong Kong. A podcast for all lovers of freedom and justice! Music from this week's show: Saturday in the Park by Chicago. And we're off next week, but we'll see you again on the 16th. Happy Independence Day to all!

Pride and Prejudice

This week, we take a little break from politics to bring you one of our favorite people -- writer/director Whit Stillman, who's new movie Love & Friendship is in theaters now. We talk Jane Austen (the movie is based on Austen's novella Lady Susan), his writing process, and some of Stillman's favorite films. Then, Charles C.W. Cooke, newly minted National Review Online Editor (and co-host of the wildly popular Mad Dogs and Englishmen podcast) stops by to discuss the seemingly endless Brexit fallout. Also, Ricochet member Brian Wolf's Confessions of an #AlmostNeverTrumper … And What Could Make Me Change My Mind makes our podcasters confess what might change their mind. We're off next week. Have a great 4th, everyone! Music from this week’s episode: Living In America by James Brown The brand new opening sequence for the Ricochet Podcast was composed and produced by James Lileks.
