To kick off a great Fourth of July Weekend we'll need firecrackers, but, of course, only with adult supervision. For the former, we've got John Yoo filling in for Rob and Charles C.W. Cooke as our first guest - for the latter, Mr. Bill McGurn.
To start, Peter and James get to pick Yoo's brain on a few of the recent Supreme Court decisions along with Bill Cosby's release. Then Charlie gives an ode to the only country on Earth that lets you move here and consider yourself a full member. Lastly, Bill fills us in on his saintly godson, Jimmy Lai, and his concerns for the future of Hong Kong. A podcast for all lovers of freedom and justice!
Music from this week's show: Saturday in the Park by Chicago.
And we're off next week, but we'll see you again on the 16th. Happy Independence Day to all!
Hosted by James Lileks,
John Yoo, and
Peter Robinson, with guests BMBill McGurn and CCCharles C.W. Cooke

Was there supposed to be some kind of title other than Ricochet Podcast #551 ?

Cosby did not "get off on a technicality," he did not "walk," he was in prison for almost 3 years and is apparently now blind from glaucoma.

Whoops! Fixed.
This was an interesting production week. If you were with us during the recording session you might be aware that someone rammed their car into a telephone pole near Yeti's home and took out power to his neighborhood. Luckily, yours truly always makes a backup recording. So there was a little WWE tag-teaming in post.

I've often marveled that people who produce other podcasts and sometimes even live radio shows, can get screwed up by a power outage or other technical issue because they don't even have a backup recording system. Let alone not have backup power, which is even more inexplicable. Good to know you're better than that, but guys in your positions should have UPSes too. I've been using them for about 20 years now, wouldn't be without them. And I mean GOOD ones, not the cheap junk you can get at Walmart or something. The one I just got for my main computer setup (in a 24u rack cabinet) to replace one that had worn out, normally costs about $1300 but I got a "new old stock" unit with fresh batteries, for $650. (This model, except mine was new-in-box and came from a US seller:

) I run my main computer setup from 240v so I don't have to deal with "load balancing" across more than one outlet to avoid popping a circuit breaker. Most computer stuff these days is auto-voltage, anywhere from 100v (Japan) up to 240v (most of Europe etc, and in the US for circuits that power kitchen stoves, water heaters, A/C units...) so it's not difficult.

My backup recording system worked flawlessly, thank you very much. We had a complete recording of the show recorded in the cloud (we record the show in the cloud AND locally) and we always have two people in different locations recording the show. Furthermore, I was able to re-connect to the show by tethering my laptop to my phone about 2 minutes after the power went out.
For the record, I have a UPS system (and yes, it's a good one) but it did not matter in this situation as the car that hit the pole that took out the power took out the internet as well. Both were back up in about 35-40 minutes.
I've often marvel at people who offer opinions on situations in which they have ZERO facts at hand and don't bother to ask questions before they mouth off with their ill informed "solutions."
