Tired of the toxicity of social media? Why not join Ricochet for just $5/month? Think of it as an online bar. Come in, have a drink, hang out, say whatever you want. But don’t badger, bully, or berate the other drinkers. That's our only rule.
Back in February, I wrote this post about the efforts by various Republican politicians to rename at least a couple of airports for Donald Trump. It seems that the renaming dream has not faded; in fact, it has come to fruition! According to this AP article, the board of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (more commonly called the Kennedy Center) has voted to rename the organization.
“The Kennedy Center Board of Trustees voted unanimously today to name the institution The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts," said Roma Daravi, the institution's vice president for public relations.
One might think it would be enough of a mouthful without the second "The" in there, but that's how they roll. Who is the chair of the board, by the way? Huh, it turns out to be President Donald J. Trump. Well, that could explain the awkwardness of the new full name. I see that on their website, they have a little logo in the upper left corner that says The Trump Kennedy Center, but the name the browser displays for that tab is still The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, so it will be a bit before the name has been changed everywhere, I suppose. Also from the AP article:
Trump, a Republican who's chairman of the board, said at the White House that he was “surprised" and “honored” by the vote. “The board is a very distinguished board, most distinguished people in the country, and I was surprised by it and I was honored by it,” he said.
Mmm, this seems like a stretch. He was surprised? How often does an organization change its name, and the chair doesn't even know it is happening? This is seemingly a man with the impulses of a twelve-year-old boy and the memory of, oh, Joe Biden. I wonder if Donald Trump remembers that he has been joking about calling it the Trump Kennedy Center for some time now.
What places and things can we expect to be renamed in the future? One obvious new name would be Trump is Grand Canyon. I wouldn't want to see President Trump rename all the months, as the president-for-life of Turkmenistan did (including naming one for his mother), but who could begrudge changing at least one month's name to Trumpuary? It will be the greatest month of them all, many people say so. Maybe the country should be renamed to Trumpistan? Too Asian? OK, maybe Trumpmerica, then. You may think that is going too far, but as Donald Trump says, many world leaders have told him, America was a dead country before Inauguration Day 2025. And now it's the hottest country on the planet. This wasn't a case of saving someone who was mostly dead. Any common miracle man can do that.
Donald Trump resurrected a dead country. Sure, Jesus resurrected Lazarus, but did everyone say that Lazarus went on to be the hottest guy in the world? Not a one that I'm aware of. I reckon that if you resurrect an entire dead country, you should get to name it after yourself. I'm sure the membership has some fine ideas for other name changes.

I hear they are thinking of renaming a famous Jack Lemon/Walter Matthau/Burgess Meredith movie "Trumpy Old Men."

I must say, you do have solid arguments. Although, I must say that I prefer naming things after dead people. They can't make mistakes and embarrass themselves or others. They don't overstay their welcome.

Apple pie. It's obvious, isn't it? That way, we can all say "as American as Donald Trump pie." I think he'd like that.
