I’m so sad that you left out the Memphis jokes. :(

@concretevol — Always good to hear the sound of home in someone’s voice. :) Don’t get much of it up here in MT. Also, no, Arkansas will never take Memphis. Y’all can keep it!

Hahaha, yes the “pre-podcast” conversation was fun.  :-)  Maybe it will be released later as a Too Hot for Podcast episode.

The TSP discussion reminded me of drilling-out showerheads. Do you wonder why you don’t have any water pressure in the shower? Well, you might only have to go down to your local Ace Hardware, pick up a $5 plastic shower head and drill out the end of it. More water will be used and you’ll have much better pressure.

Counselor, you must learn never to utter the word interesting. Say what the interest consists in & of what kind it is. The voice of conservatism, principled & putting one’s money where one’s mouth is has to be far more concrete. It’s also such a concealment for griefs & gripes. I’m against it, like Professor Wagstaff.

To Mr. Terry Snapp–blacks do not have it better & better. There’s no need for people to trump up complaints… We’re on better ground pointing out that liberals have ruined major cities.

Yes, the field for 2016 was crazy–a show of the delusion, helplessness, & lack of political savvy of just about every institution that mattered–from the GOP at all levels to the journals, pundits, & whatever else matters. Consultant class worst at fault, of course. Nobody seems to have had any idea what a plausible future for the GOP primary electorate & the GOP electorate might mean. This was supposed to be a movable feast. Crazy, but it happened. At the same time, it shows something conservatives need to see: Lots of these successful governors or, according to taste, young new fresh Senators–they cannot persuade an audience given the chance. Several people got attention before Mr. Trump ate it up & none stuck–nor did anyone fight him for the attention of the media or for popular attention in the GOP primary electorate through other means. Nobody really bothered or cared, because the thought was foreign to them somehow…

Yes, the primary system is crazy. Ricochet should have a guide to it. How it came out of the New Left-Dem fights in ’68, how the GOP took it over for no reason, & how it’s become the prophecy of democracy unfolding one crazy step at a time. But it cannot be changed without serious rethinking of the party. Who’s gonna do that–serious question.

I always recommend the unfortunately wonky new Constitution of The GOP.

Yes, the Dems to better at these things: They’re just much better in every part of the presidential electioneering system. Anyone learning from them?

Yes, conservatives have long been deluded that they matter. Now they’re shown they don’t. But they have to somehow matter in the future, because conservatism is both serious & the repository of an important part of the truth about America. It’s gotta be more populist, but in a way that acknowledges America is a nation. If conservatism means starting by shutting up most of the population, it’s never going to be a serious guide to a viable electoral coalition. ‘We’d have a great country if only everyone stopped disagreeing with us ain’t the ticket’. It’s worth asking what conservatives who see that Mr. Trump is a conman have to say about what should change about conservatism. If the answer is no, nothing–like the GOP establishment feels about free trade plus low-class immigration, well…

So I think Concretevol has it right. It’s fun & games when we face the absurd stuff going on–a lot of self-important bubbles have got to burst–& a lot of changes have to be seen & talked about with common sense. But it’s not ok if the one thing we don’t have is any kind of forum where we’re sort-of-agreeing-with-each-other.

I definitely felt like I was shafted by the primary system. Like Ryan, I watched as one acceptable candidate after another dropped out, and now my Montana conservative friends are giving me the anti-Hillary arguments you guys discussed.

I reply that it’s Trump’s job to earn my vote, and so far I can’t see that he’s trying to. I could be persuaded down the road, but it’s not looking that way right now.

I imagine any future changes to the primary system will involve more closed primaries rather than a one-day everywhere vote.

This is my take as well.  It’s the candidate’s job to build a larger voting base and so far Trump has seemed disinterested to even pay lip service to conservative concerns.

The only way I can make sense of the “not Trump = yes Hillary” argument is if I was somehow default voting for the Republican candidate. Since I’m not an official party member, I think that falls apart. I’ve only associated with the Republican party in the past because of overlapping interests, and it shouldn’t be surprising that by “bringing people in” Trump would also be leaving other people out.

Coincidentally, when I drove to Seattle in May, the only signs in Washington visible from the 90 were Trump signs. Some only an hour or so outside of the city.

The problem with that is you need way more people in the general election and probably can’t afford to alienate any existing party members.  I do think that any alliance between conservatives and populist/nationalists was artificial and probably doomed in the long run.
