Early in my career a young co-worker was looking forward to her 18th birthday because she’d “no longer have to listen to her mother” at which notice the 55 year old woman at the next desk bust out laughing because she had just returned from a visit with her 85 year old mother at which the mother had opined on a variety of topics concerning the 55 year old’s life.
Some years ago I was talking with a federal judge who noted that despite his protestations that as a federal judge he was a very powerful and important person, his wife still insisted he take out the trash.
“Important” people benefit greatly from having in their lives people (a spouse, a sibling, a parent, a good friend) who can keep them from getting too full of themselves.
That’s hilarious.
My family shared about 1000 texts last night. My youngest brother reached out to let me know that he’d heard from son #1 who was on a layover in Amsterdam.

On the most recent episode of Mad Dogs and Englishmen Kevin Williamson noted that his father did not hear about the controversial firing from The Atlantic because, like many normal people, his carries on his life quite well without Twitter and other incendiary social media. (Apparently Kevin’s father emailed several days after the firing to ask how the new job was going. )
