What Just Happened in the Rose Garden?
Earlier today, President Trump commented about a planned infrastructure meeting that he just left with Speaker Pelosi and Senator Schumer. This was followed by Pelosi and Schumer describing how the President left the meeting without the discussion on infrastructure even taking place. They were ready to present a 35-page plan and said the President just shut it down. They went on to describe how he “ran away” from the meeting.
Apparently, the President asked them to stop the constant harassment and re-investigation (of the Mueller Report) and threats of impeachment (of which there is no basis) so they can sit down and work together amicably. Is this unreasonable? Is it not insane to constantly backstab, threaten, and investigate, then expect to come into a meeting all smiles and get anything done? Would the meeting on infrastructure have gone well, had the Democrats accepted the two years of investigation that cost us, the American taxpayers, $35 to 40 million (and I think we’re still counting) several weeks ago when it was released?
I am beyond frustrated as a taxpayer and a US citizen. What if it were me, my administration, and my family who was interrogated for over two years, with investigation concluding no collusion or obstruction? Yet, they still chose not to accept the report, continued to ask for further investigations, and I was expected to enter a meeting all smiles ready to go? I would define that as insanity.
I also question why infrastructure investment was not a part of Obama’s plans. Why are our roads, bridges, grid, airports, etc., still needing a costly overhaul? The example of the failed high-speed rail debacle in California explains a few things, filed under the heading “Mismanagement.” Both Pelosi and Schumer said they “were ready, as part of their infrastructure plan, to create jobs.” Trump has and is already creating jobs. We have the best economy and lowest poverty rate in decades. The picture they are attempting to paint is that the President is unwilling to work with them, is unhinged, and they will innocently tiptoe back to their offices with their 35-page infrastructure plan and pray. Really?
There is more here than meets the eye. Are they nervous about what is and will continue to be revealed about what really happened to lead to this investigation? Is this their nuclear option – pressure from behind the scenes, maybe from the past administration or even Clinton herself, to do something to shut down the revealing information about what really happened or distract from it? In their follow-up speeches, they touted Roosevelt’s plan, talked about Thomas Jefferson, and their great infrastructure plans! What? Were their elections sabotaged, and eventually their presidency, as we are witnessing today? How can they even compare it?
In spite of all the pressure on this President, he and his administration are still moving forward with getting our country back to prosperity, security, and strength for all. People like Sanders and other Democrats are still hollering about racism. Have not all minorities been lifted and supported, women, families, strengthened by this President’s policies? What racism are they talking about specifically?
In my state of Florida, the Democrats have been the ones holding up the funds for rebuilding after the enormous destruction of Hurricane Michael. Our state representatives have hit brick walls and we are just now seeing a green light for funding. The Democrats porked it up with all kinds of other things, not wanting to release critical infrastructure funding, while a very important Air Force Base, Tyndall, waits for money. People are still living in tents and trailers in the Panhandle, while infrastructure is still being assessed, repaired and cleanup continues.

I have a feeling that’s how it generally works in Washington. The two parties bark and scream and call each other names in front of the cameras, and then work together behind the scenes (to screw over the citizens as much as possible while filling their own coffers). It’s all a big show.
The President is a Washington outsider and doesn’t understand that this is a big game and he’s supposed to play along.
This sounds like a re-run of another meeting the three of them had–in fact, I thought somehow an old post was showing up! I can’t remember what they met on, but they described the results in almost the exact same way. (The part that we didn’t even talk about it and he shut them down and “ran away.”) All this stuff is bad enough without a replay! I don’t expect any meaningful legislature to be passed any time soon. And I hope I’m wrong!

Yes but the Dims have ratcheted it up on Trump (along with a few R holdouts). Just as actions have consequences, the Dims need to pay a price for their attacks. Has anyone in the Dim leadership attacked Antifa and told them to knock it off.

I empathize with Trump. If they did to me what they have done to him I would be spitting mad. And I think most Americans actually agree that the Dems are overdoing it. It is more than “mistakes were made.” There is something sinister afoot.
But the infrastructure is apparently in need of serious upgrading. Call it Kabuki all you want, but somewhere there is a real world of material objects rusting. The rest of us will pay the price for this nonsense.
What is to be done? I have no idea. I know that the “Wall” bill that the Dems rejected was in fact a fairly normal offering and would have sailed through under Obama. So there is bad faith. How can one negotiate with bad faith actors?
The Dems have painted themselves in and can’t stop. So Trump can’t win with this ploy. God help us all if an emergency ensues.

The revolutionary’s motto is: The worse the better. The crazier and more dysfunctional Washington is, the better Biden’s campaign slogan, Make America Normal Again, will resonate.
The big difference was that the meeting I think you are referring to was the one he insisted on being all on camera, for the very purpose of keeping them from going out the front door and misrepresenting everything about the meeting. Obviously, this didn’t take place this time.
Why should we even accept the narrative of this meeting and Trump “running away” from Schumer and Pelosi? I’ll wait to hear other side of story before making any judgement but there is no way in hell Im taking Nancy or Chuck’s word for anything.
Personally, I am losing interest. How long have we been waiting for that IG report on the FISA abuse? How ’bout Trump releasing classified documents on the predicates for the spying on his campaign? Nothing gets done in any person’s sense of a reasonable amount of time. The Mueller farse of an investigation actually started well before Mueller was appointed, it started before Trump was even elected. This is 21/2 years later and the Democrats are still investigating. The whole thing is a complete fraud. What type of flawed individual wants to be a politician? I’m nearly bald, and I am still pulling my hair out. There is always the next election, right around the corner–always the next excuse for paralysis. Does anyone here believe Pelosi or Schumer ever had any intention of working with Trump, on anything? It’s all a huge joke…a bad one…and it’s on us.
I am astounded that he has been able to function for all this time, no matter what they throw at him. As Klavan is always pointing out, for someone who is said to be a Dictator and a Tyrant, there is no evidence whatsoever that he is one, and his forbearance in the face of all this vitriol by people as wretched as Pelosi, and Schumer and Crazy Maisie and all the other despicable characters in Congress and elsewhere shows an amazing strength of character, no matter what is said of him.
I have no clue what happens in Washington because I have absolutely no trust that any party within a 100 mile of the event will tell me anything approaching the truth.

The real scandal really is how the Fed collects all this tax money, ostensibly for “infrastructure”, then only ever doles it out politically. They take our states’ moneys, then make the states fight to get back their “fair shares”. It’s a fraud perpetuated by both parties.

States should do most infrastructure as with most of the things where Washington takes spending power from the states and gives it back with their own strings. The Federal government isn’t up to it as long as it can do other things it shouldn’t that serve Washington’s interests. In most states the parties can work with each other because what they work on is real and benefits them and their constituents. The Feds have real constituents but they’re in Washington, even those presumably representing state interests are mostly professional lobbyists and represent the abstractions of the various state interests big enough to fund them. It’s different and even if the funds eventually go to the States, it’s Washington funds going where Washington decides. These are abstractions for the most part and we need to understand why it simply just corrupts and wastes and can’t self correct.

Yes I remember but it wasn’t jobs Obama was shoveling! Pelosi sending out a message right before an important infrastructure meeting that Trump was involved in a cover up – then goes into a meeting with him expecting results!? Mark Stein said today on radio that this is what they do – politicians, and like Drew said in the first comment, he’s not a politician. Stein said he tweets to vent otherwise like any normal person, being batted around day after day after day – your head would explode!

I’m just as disgusted as you are. We have all waited over two years for a big push by the Republican House and Senate to support this president, and it has yet to appear. Instead, we have silliness going on with influential legislators like McConnell touting a 21 and over age for buying cigarettes. Really?
Oh Trump knows how it works. This is him putting on his big show. Meanwhile the Dems and media carp endlessly about meaningless BS while there are very serious issues that are ignored. Again.

I have never watched anyone look less comfortable in front of a camera in my life. The thing she did with Chuck after the meeting? The stops and starts and stammering over every other word. It was just awful.
Here’s the thing. Let the Democrats be Democrats. They want to be left wingers. Pelosi and Chuck are standing in the way. They want to play politics; the base wants to impeach and have social democracy. Neither can deliver anything legislatively at this point. They’re both used up. I hear the changing of the guards.
We in Florida are fortunate enough to have a Governor who has no time for sanctuary cities and will fight tooth and nail to stop illegal immigrants being dumped in our State. Thank you Gov. De Santis.
Ironically, it was the Democrat candidate in 2016 who evoked the possibility that the Republican candidate might not accept the result of the election. 30 months later, the Democrats will still not accept the result of that election.
Nancy Pelosi was mentored by Phil Burton who often repeated a quote attributed to Democrat Jesse Unruh: “If you can’t eat their food, drink their booze, (make love to) their women and then vote against them, you have no business being up here.” That is the level of (dis)honor that these people have.
