Rules

Review the list of presenters and nominees (below) and pick the 5 individuals you think are most likely to deliver politicized content during the 2017 Oscars broadcast. That is your fantasy team.

At least 1 selection must be a nominee and at least 1 must be a presenter. *Emma Stone is presenting and a nominee, for purposes of selection she will be considered a nominee, but points awarded for political speech in either role.

Submit your list of five in the comments section, or send via email to: Saintpaul777@gmail.com or Tweet to:  @bspward
Points awarded for scoring categories, for explicit mention or clear allusion — via comment, gesture, symbol, or text. Official scoring to be done by judges panel. All decisions are final.
Eligible mentions occur during broadcast of awards ceremony only (not red carpet or after party/interviews).
Multiple mentions of same category scores multiple times.
Contestants for best film are inclusive of all producers (or whomever) may accept award.
Host (Jimmy Kimmel) not included in the Field category.

    You know a negative side effect of doing this is that now my interest in the Oscars is much higher than it would have been. I might just tune in. Just to see how my team does.

    I don’t watch movies all that much and I pay absolutely no attention to the self-adulatory nonsense that entertainers seem to need to convince themselves that what they do has meaning.  But, I’ve played fantasy football over the years with relatively limited understanding of the merits of the broad field of players and done okay.  I am also aware of two facts: one of my sisters, who couldn’t name a starting quarterback in the NFL who didn’t play for the Vikings (unless they were involved in a serious crime) once won our family league – blind squirrels, acorns and all that; and one of my sons, who played college ball, played high school ball against several players who are now in the NFL and knows more about football than anyone else I know has never won our family league.  Never.  A fact that drives him more than just a little nuts.

    So, in homage to blind squirrels and complete ignorance:

    3. Scarlett Johansson
    4. Leonardo DiCaprio
    5. Meryl Streep

    So totally unfair! Not all players get to play! They only have a chance to score if they make it to a microphone and, for that, they have to win!! Level the playing field, says I!

    Can you imagine Mel Gibson getting up there and giving a conservative rant?? That would be so awesome! But, it’s not how conservatives roll, is it?

    Of course, that’s why (as a wild card) it could warrant up to 15 points!

    Here is my team:

    Shirley MacLaine

    Leonardo DiCaprio

    Emma Stone

    Damien Chazelle

    La-La-Land

    (But I still don’t think I’ll watch it. I’ve decided not to pay attention to this awards season at all, due to the open mic aesthetic and entertainers who think we care what they think. Just not putting myself through it all.  Which makes me wonder if there is any kind of drop in awards show viewership because of other people like me. A la the presidential polls last year. Or maybe there is a bump in viewership because of the gawker effect. Hmm.)

    I only need to pick three:

    1. Every person of color
    2. Every person with at least one drop of Hispanic blood
    3. Anyone who refused to stand when Elia Kazan received his Oscar.

      I don’t really want to play.

    This contest does make the Oscars worth watching again.  It’s another Donald Trump miracle!

    But instead of getting mad at Celebrity X for spewing inappropriate inanities, you’re cheering for him.   Same dynamic as when the RB from your fantasy football team plays against your hometown team.  It’s great, you’re a winner either way.  Plus it devalues the substance of what they’re actually saying and commoditizes it for your personal gain.  No better way to blunt their impact.

    Come on people, enter today!

    OK. I’ll play:

    Gael Garcia Bernal – takes himself very seriously, films infused with politics, Twitter feed very pro-illeagal immigrant

    Casey Affleck (nominee) – hard not to pick, odds on favorite to win, known lefty, film about working class struggles

    John Cho – comedic partner of Kal Penn (former Obama WH official), anti-Trump Twitter feed, why is he presenting?

    Kate McKinnon – you McKidding me? Only reason she is there is to make a political statement, this is a slam dunk

    Felicity Jones – ditto

    And no, I have not seen any of these movies.  Maybe if one of them lasts long enough to be viewed on TCM….

    I was going to ask for a show of hands to see if anyone cared, then I realized she was on the list for this game.

    Noooooo!   There goes my team.

    Just shows you how selfish these Hollywood types can be.  Worrying about her precious impending birth giving and not caring one whit about the little people and their fantasy politicization teams.

    And the Ricochet winners of the 2017 Oscar’s Politicization Fantasy League are:

    @michaelbrehm  19 points

    @odysseus 18 points

    @eustacecscrubb 15 points

    In truth, we’re all losers.  Or at least those of us watching the whole agonizing slog of the broadcast were losers.  But the game was the thing and 11 instances of politicization were documented during the ceremony.  Full details and stats coming in the next HWX broadcast later this week. Stay tuned!

    And winners, I’ll be sending a Ricochet message for contact info for the delivery of your glamorous prizes.
