Tired of the toxicity of social media? Why not join Ricochet for just $5/month? Think of it as an online bar. Come in, have a drink, hang out, say whatever you want. But don’t badger, bully, or berate the other drinkers. That's our only rule.
Many people have made admirable efforts to characterize and understand the irrational, hysterical and bizarre behavior of people on the Left. Still, trying to understand the reasons they perceive life as they do is challenging. The other day, however, I had an insight that might, at least in part, explain how the Left sees the world, and why their view is so limited and selective. First, let’s look at typical descriptions of the Left by the Right. The Left is usually described as an elitist, utopian-thinking, Marxist group. All of those attributes, I believe, are true. Missing from the description are the reasons why these beliefs are so easy to maintain, in view of real-life events:
The Left views life through a peephole.
You know, the tiny hole that is built into hotel room doors. (Let’s ignore for the moment that some of those peepholes have been tampered with.)
What does it mean to see life through a peephole like the view of a visitor to a room?
First, the view is extremely limited and permanent; a person from the outside can’t make adjustments to get a more complete and undistorted view.
Second, the view through the peephole allows the viewer to assume that the story that the view presents is true and legitimate; after all, it’s the only view available in this setting.
Third, the peephole doesn’t allow for any adjustments, such as binoculars or a telescope provide; a person can only see what is right in front of him or her and the view may be distorted.
So, how would the “view through the peephole” create a reality for a person of the Left? We can take three current scenarios and overlay them on the criteria listed above.
Transgenderism is a great example. Once the Left determined that accepting transgenderism, whether for adults or children, was a compassionate mindset, all other issues related to this issue were simply ignored. Especially with children, gender-affirming care and its effects were discarded; threats about potential suicides if the condition was untreated were highlighted (and the information is untrue); ruining the future sex life of the patient was denied. And the psychological condition that led to this diagnosis was and is overlooked. The compassionate mindset for the potentially transgender child takes precedence over any other treatment or rationale.
Another example of viewing life through a peephole is provided by the protestors for Palestine. The Left has made the cause of the Gazans a symbol of victimhood and oppression inflicted by Israelis. The rule of Hamas, their violence and cruelty, particularly on October 7, are irrelevant. The history of the Israelis and the viciousness they have endured over the years is discarded. The only view through the peephole that matters is the suffering of the Palestinians, including Hamas.
A third example is our treatment of illegal aliens. The Left wants to open our borders to anyone who wants to come here. The fact that they have not entered through the formal process doesn’t matter. These illegal aliens have been bringing in fentanyl through the cartels; some of them are criminals, many times over. They are members of gangs and are supported by some cities that refuse to jail or imprison them. Instead of seeing these aliens as invaders, the Left judges law enforcement at every level as the bad guys. For a person of the Left, demonstrating compassion for the illegal aliens and their families is all that matters. The other data might as well not exist.
Seeing life through a peephole is also comforting because it is simplistic. It doesn’t reflect real life. It doesn’t allow for contradictory information. It doesn’t allow for compassion for your fellow citizens, or for those members of humanity who are violated and abused by these groups.
That’s viewing life through a peephole.

Indeed. The liberal view is very narrow-minded. You make a good analogy.

Seeing through a peephole means that past and future are irrelevant. You cannot know them.

Precisely

As do we all, except for those of us who are omniscient. Different peepholes for different folks, though.
