Tired of the toxicity of social media? Why not join Ricochet for just $5/month? Think of it as an online bar. Come in, have a drink, hang out, say whatever you want. But don’t badger, bully, or berate the other drinkers. That's our only rule.
"The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which Trump wants to sign into law by July 4, features a moratorium on state AI laws that has provoked backlash on both sides of the aisle.
The provision, as written in the version of the bill passed by the House of Representatives last month, makes it illegal for state governments to enforce any law “limiting, restricting or otherwise regulating” AI models and systems. The measure has invited debate over state governments’ abilities to legislate on emerging issues like AI." From Marketwatch 6/27/25
I saw this story, along with a headline of Chuck Schumer attempting to read aloud the Big Beautiful Bill in his filibuster moment to try to scuttle what Trump hopes will pass by July 4th.
I wonder if this is Chuck's and many other Capitol Hill lawmakers' first time reading it?
The last time we went through a BBB (not to be confused with the Better Business Bureau), it was called "Build Back Better." Former President Biden called it "his" plan...the Build Back Better Plan, which promised utopia but never delivered. Oddly, many world leaders, including former Canadian PM Trudeau and King Charles (then-Prince Charles), were mouthing the same words. Did they all get the same memo at the same time? (And who sent it?)
Instead, we got inflation, soaring food and fuel costs, handcuffed manufacturing, oil and gas supplies, out-of-reach housing and rent costs, rapidly rising interest rates, meat and chicken factories mysteriously catching fire, more animal viruses resulting in the culling of even more chickens and cattle while fake meat grown in labs are introduced; millions of illegals walking past immigration-enforced borders wearing clean clothes and sneakers and holding cell phones; homeless encampments taking over entire city blocks and parks, openly shooting up drugs and defecating on the streets, and cannabis shops popping up left and right in every town to further stun an already stunned population. Things were not building back better.
I don't know many of the details of this new BBB, but artificial intelligence without state control is a terrible idea. It will make "Build Back Better" seem like the good ol' days. The tech titans and China are in a race to control this sector, so the fewer boundaries the better - they are not looking for safety first - and there will be no putting this genie back in the bottle.
If all the sci-fi movies ever made should have taught us anything, it's that the human race never wins out (without major destruction). Artificial intelligence inserted into every sector of our world without boundaries should finish off any semblance of being able to tell what is good for society and the human species, because we will have no evidence of what life looked like before it. You already cannot tell if what you are seeing, reading, or hearing is real or a recreation. Maybe that is the goal?
This is a bad idea, President Trump. We need more guardrails, not less. Is it too late? Have the tech gurus gotten to you? Please say it isn't so! Go back and read 1984!
This is not a drill. The only thing left without a tracking and scanning code will be us. Oh, wait...

When Congress has an AI to replace the budget office, parliamentarian and publications, the AI will probably issue an "I can't do that, Dave" message and delete any provisions restricting AI.

I have been trying to imagine what kind of crazy trans-Marxist nonsense that California would require of A.I. that is reachable from that state.

I prefer AI without state control. Don't regulate the fledgling industry before we even know what it looks like.
Don't worry, murder is still illegal.

I prefer we let the states regulate as they see fit, except for some narrow exceptions laid out in the Constitution. If they want to regulate a fledgling industry, let them try.

Pass the bill. The AI restriction provision will eventually be struck down by SCOTUS . . .
