There is a simple and clean pathway for Israel and Gaza. My answer does NOT involve any ground assault, or unnecessarily risking the lives of good people. It does not even require killing any Arab who is not shooting back. No nukes or chemical weapons are needed.
All Israel needs to do is a classic medieval siege. Gaza is about 7X the size of Manhattan. It already has walls on three sides (although with some holes in it), and an ocean on the other.
All Israel has to do is wall Gaza off in every way: fuel, food, water, communications of all kinds. Only shoot in at those who shoot out.
Set up a few openings in the wall. Anyone who wants to live comes out with their hands up. They will be sent back in after the siege is complete. Anyone who wants to live, walks out. Anyone who prefers to die, stays put. Israel does not decide: the people of Gaza can decide for themselves whether they want to die with honor, or live with defeat.
It might take six months or a year for Gaza to run out of food. No matter. Maintaining a siege is easy compared to all the alternatives. And Israel would not have to shoot a single innocent person.
Isn't that a great solution?

For me, the idea of sending troops into an urban deathtrap is insanity incarnate. Sieges work.

First, do you think that there is any possibility, however remote, that Israel would be able to pull this off in the real world?

You mean because of international pressure? So long as the doors are open to those who wish to leave, and they can be interrogated legally, all can be well. "We are letting people leave. We are avoiding all civilian casualties by not entering the fortified and full-of-civilians Gaza strip"

And the Rules of Engagement become clear to both sides:
If you want to live, you go to one of the approved gates, in the open, with little clothing and nothing else. Anyone suspected of terror activities will be taken into custody and tried. Anyone else goes into a temporary camp.
Anyone who approaches the wall in the wrong place, or in the wrong way, is shot on sight. Clear rules, with the minimum of opportunity for confusion and accident.
