Dozens of times, I have seen people write a comment something very much like, "No matter how much you hate the media, you don't hate them enough." Very often, this sentiment has been expressed by self-proclaimed Christians. I'm sure that few things are more aggravating to actual Christians than hearing someone who is not a Christian talk about Christianity. I have a passing familiarity with the Bible, but probably know far less about it than most people here. I've always had the impression that the Christian message was along the lines of loving your neighbor.

Am I all wet, or is it an un-Christian message to tell people that they need to hate other people, and if they already hate, hate even more? From the phrasing, it appears that there is no upper limit to the recommended level of hatred. Somebody fill me in on this. How do you reconcile Christian teachings with the advice to hate people because of their profession?

The term “hate,” like several other words, has lost its forcefulness due to over use.

Seems like hating "the media" is (slightly?) different than hating any particular member of the media. Hating an institution versus hating a person?

Is saying "You can't hate the media enough" the same as saying, "I can't hate Mr/Mrs/Ms (fill in the name of a news anchor commentator) enough" -?

For example, is it acceptable for Christians to say, "You can't hate Planned Parenthood enough" - ?

Do you think there are people who say "I hate ABC News, and you should, too," hold harmless all the people who write, edit, and produce the news there?

Randy, you are right about hating individuals/fellow humans not being a biblical concept. Hopefully, as some are explaining here, that's not what's being called for in phrases such as "hate the media."

Just to make it clear where it says we're not to hate, in Matthew 5, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says:

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers,[i] what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

And the Apostle Paul in Romans 12:

19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it[a] to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
