Twenty Year Anniversary of a Disaster of the Left

Today is the twenty-year anniversary of “The Day Without a Mexican.” Few people remember what happened on May 1, 2006, and that is a good thing. The NCLR in California called for a general strike on May Day, asking Mexicans to stay home as a sign of solidarity and a demonstration of economic power.

Quite a few people did stay home. Traffic was lighter, parking at the malls was easier, restaurant parking and seating were light. It was quite a pleasant Monday at work and on drives around my native San Diego. I went down to Fashion Valley Mall, had a fish taco at Rubio’s, and bought something expensive at the Apple store.

My experience was typical. Every part of my daily life was improved by the voluntary absence of a chunk of the population. No one in the general population suffered or went without a vital service.

This was not the intention of the strike organizers. They disappeared the event into Orwellian denial and never tried anything like that again.

Please take a moment this weekend to reflect on the occasional abject failure of the long march through our American institutions.

Hope springs eternal.
