Georgia School Shooting

School shooting in Georgia yesterday brings a lot of conflicting issues to the fore:

• On Wednesday afternoon, Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith made clear the Apalachee High School attacker was stopped by an armed School Resource Officer.

  During a joint press conference with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), Smith noted that the shooter was confronted by a School Resource Officer and faced with the option of surrendering or being shot.

Gee, a trained armed officer stopped the shooter before it got a lot worse. But no one needs cops in schools. We've never been big fans of cops in the schools, mostly because they're mismanaged, horribly deployed, and expected to play the bully to administrators' political whims. If there were a professionally trained, deployed and utilized force that actually was permitted to enforce the Law, we might reconsider...

The Georgia school did have an armed School Resource Officer that saved lives, but not all schools want SROs.

The last paragraph in the quote should include teachers' unions as well as school administrators. The Covid lockdowns and remote learning opened a lot of parents' eyes to what their children were being taught. Add to this the mantra of "The school pipeline to prison" that leads schools to conceal violent threats and violent behavior in schools.

From colleges to elementary schools, there is a belief that schools should be sanctuaries, not just from violence but also from the penalties of the criminal activity of students and faculty.

Outside influencers do not want to see SROs in schools because they wish to eliminate your right to own a firearm. To protect your own life, or the rights of others entrusted to protect your children from those who have no intention of obeying the most basic law of all—you have a right to your own life.
