I've been amused and appalled, both here and elsewhere over the last couple of days, by those who--in spite of all appearances heretofore--have been impervious to the concept of irony. Yet they seem to have developed a revolutionary new understanding of it when it comes to claiming to recognize it with regard to the current situation in the Middle East. (Certainly, their definition of it [my own, which is pretty solid], doesn't always comport with my historical understanding of their views, which are largely on record.)

Nothing more recently, perhaps, than when it comes to the latest Guardian headline: UN chief urges Israel to allow ‘life-saving’ supplies into Gaza after only power station runs out of fuel.

Because I don't know how else to read this other than with an understanding that BEFORE Saturday of last week, "life-saving" supplies were allowed into Gaza, and that BEFORE Saturday of last week, the main Gaza power station never ran out of fuel.

Gosh. I wonder what's changed since Saturday of last week. Hello?

Inquiring minds, both ironically and otherwise inclined, would like to know. Please weigh in if--and only if--you've light to add, rather than heat.

    I'm still trying to figure out how the Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip were "oppressed". I mean, the Israelis left the Strip, removing Jewish residents and leaving a lot of things behind - greenhouses, businesses, etc - that had been built by those Jewish families. The Gaza Strip was left to the Palestinians to do with as they wished. How could they be "oppressed" by Israelis who weren't there anymore?

    I hope the Israelis ignore these idiots in the West.

    I wonder if the editors at The Guardian wonder what has changed in the meantime? Why is this a problem all of a sudden? Perhaps they should send a team of investigative reporters to Gaza to try to figure out what the problem is.

    I'll volunteer to pay for their plane tickets.
