Tired of the toxicity of social media? Why not join Ricochet for just $5/month? Think of it as an online bar. Come in, have a drink, hang out, say whatever you want. But don’t badger, bully, or berate the other drinkers. That's our only rule.
The powerful allure of Socialism
There was a Yahoo News/YouGov poll of 1,597 U.S. adults conducted from June 26 to 30, just before Zorhan Mamdani’s NYC primary win. It did not find the candidate himself to be particularly popular (or well-known). Overall, just 22% of Americans said they had a favorable opinion of Mamdani. A greater share (31%) saw him unfavorably. But...there's always a but...his IDEAS were home runs with those surveyed:
The poll showed that Mamdani’s ideas were much more popular than Mamdani himself. Asked whether they “approve or disapprove of the following proposals to lower the cost of living” — none of which were attributed to Mamdani — Americans approved by wide margins in every instance.
62% approved and 24% disapproved of implementing free childcare for every child aged 6 weeks to 5 years (a +38-point margin).
60% approved and 22% disapproved of freezing rent for lower-income tenants (a +38-point margin).
51% approved and 31% disapproved of creating a network of government-owned grocery stores focused on keeping prices low rather than making a profit (a +20-point margin).
49% approved and 34% disapproved of raising the minimum wage to $30 by 2030 (a +15-point margin).
46% approved and 36% disapproved of permanently eliminating the fares on public buses (a +10-point margin).
65% approved and 22% disapproved of raising taxes on corporations and millionaires to pay for these proposals (a +43-point margin).
While Democrats were the most supportive — predictably so — Mamdani’s policies still garnered significant support among Republicans, with roughly 4 in 10 saying they approved of freezing the rent (38%), implementing free childcare (38%), and raising taxes on corporations and millionaires to foot the bill (40%).
The first poll out for the NYC mayor's race general election showed the Zohran ahead of his nearest competitor (Cuomo) by 10 points. Do not sleep on Mamdani or on the crazy socialist platform he puts forward. And our side is not immune. The OBBB balloons the debt, and yet it was supported by Republicans with few exceptions. To quote from the late, great Glenn Frey: "It's the lure of easy money, it's got a very strong appeal."

TANSTAAFL, baby.
So, you want to turn these buildings into slums, since the landlords won't make enough money to keep them up? Inflation hits landlords, too. Who gonna pay for the paint? Who gonna pay for the sheetrock? Who gonna pay for fixing that plumbing?
Has anyone ever seen a governmental operation that did not cost more than a privately-run one? Governments are seldom efficient, effective, or adaptable. I hope you want what they have, because they aren't changin' to try and please you.
Why not $50,000 per hour? Work one or two hours and be done for the year, right? What's that, businesses cannot afford that much for marginal workers? What makes you think they can afford $30? That's why California hotels are crying now. Their cheap, illegal slave labor is leaving due to laws being enforced, and they can't afford the $30 minimum wage. Oh, boo my hoo!
You get more of what you subsidize. Want homeless people riding the buses all day long? This will do it.
Do you know how many millionaires and businesses have left already? Trump moved to Florida, and this sort of nonsense is why. Also, to Democrats and socialists, a million is not what it seems. You're making fifty grand per year? You must be a millionaire. Here's your tax bill.

Yep. Easy money is also a lie. Always.

True. But you don't find that out until later.
