Jazz flugelhorn and trumpet player, songwriter, arranger, and performer Chuck Mangione has died at age 84. I had several of his LPs and still listen to his music on Amazon Music. His music was once criticized by a friend of mine as entry-level jazz. Of course, it did seem to be more melodic and structured and didn't meander and ramble endlessly in dissonance like other practitioners of the art form. I found it refreshing.

I was fortunate enough to attend a performance by Chuck Mangione with his group at Jazz Alley in Seattle a few years ago. Not only was his own artistry impressive as always, I was also struck by his generosity as a leader, in that he made room in each number in the set for one or another member of the band to be highlighted so each member's talent was showcased as well.
RIP

He was a great spokesman for Mega-Lo Mart too.

Second album I ever owned (after Pink Floyd's "Meddle"):

Lot of celebrity deaths this week- Ozzy, Malcolm “Theo,” Hulk Hogan. I saw a graphic with their faces and had already seen headlines about their passing, but I was caught off-guard seeing Chuck Mangione among them. My dad had a Mangione greatest hits CD I liked when I was a kid, and from time to time I’ll still pull up Feels So Good or Hill Where the Lord Hides on YouTube to listen to.
Yeah, whatever. If it sounds good and feels good, it’s good music.

I will put Chuck on Quboz through my stereo this week. The soundtrack of my youth dying off is really bothering me. Even artists I really didn't appreciate. Chuck always seemed to enjoy the music, and enjoy playing.
