Watching the Weather Channel tonight is kinda like watching porn. Only these folks seem to be enjoying it more.

My baby girl is in Charlotte, expecting the worst. An ICE raid with real ice. And that will mean power outages, and that will mean chaos throughout most of the South.

Here in Ohio local media-urologists are telling us to expect a foot of snow. It’s not Kamchatka snow deep but it’s been a long time since we’ve had that much in a single sitting.

The good news is that the dog isn’t fooling around when she goes out. Temperatures of 3°F have a way of concentrating even the canine mind.

The Weather Channel has named this storm system “Fern.” Nobody names anything “Fern” anymore. Only about 1 in 13,000 female babies are tagged with the name “Fern.” No word on how many of those kids carry the middle name of “Gully.”

So, how are we doing? All stocked up on bread and toilet paper?

Staying warm here north of Detroit despite the -21 degrees windchill! Glad that I have a decent snowblower for my longish driveway. My wife convinced me to get it several years ago before my heart transplant. Yeah, I’m one of the lucky (?) or more accurately, blessed ones. So far so good folks!

You’re right about the weather hype. These storms are like the weatherman equivalent of the Super Bowl. But also an echo of the cautionary tale about the “Boy who cried wolf”….Stay warm EJ. Your daughter also. I have relatives there near Charlotte.

So far, the weather Channel predictions here in the Shenandoah Valley have gone from 15-18 inches a couple days ago to 5-8 inches just a bit ago, maybe ending with some freezing slop. When I texted our son in Boston about it, he said "You just sent it here! 18-24!" It's gonna be cold though.

    I hope I’m ready:

whole home generator that runs on propane or gas

150 gallons of propane, 20 gallons of gas

kerosene heater with 5 gals of kerosene (you ‘d be surprised how hard it is to find gas stations that still pump kerosene)

nearly 50 cubic feet of wood

My wife has already cooked three days worth of meals

72 hours of freeze dried meals x 2 (1500 calories per day, ain’t nobody gettin’ fat on those)

plenty of fuel for the chainsaw

    tirechains for the truck

50 pounds of dog food (1 Brit, 1 GSP, 1 Yorkie)

50 pounds of cat food (four cats)

and yes, because I live in the south: 5 loaves of bread and 1 1/2 gallons of milk

Take care those of you who are in the path! The problem is that the computer models can't forecast anything with a good amount of accuracy, even a few hours out.

And they are telling us what the weather will be like in 2050?

I’ve got a basement full of DoD issued MREs. If I’m eating those, it’s the apocalypse.
