While reviewing some of my mother's writings, I found a poem she composed that my sister recited at her funeral 20 years ago. I didn't think it was too bad, so I wanted to share it here. I hope you find it meaningful...
The smile is different now
the smile of her old acquaintance
- diffused, gentle, lacking malice,
eyes mood-matched.
There are no hidden messages
Once there had been guile
in the smile of her old acquaintance
-radiant, inconsequential
as a toothpaste ad.
Above it the eyes mocked.
But now, they're much older -
she and her old acquaintance,
Age sanctions, brings moderation
among other things.
Slackened skin falls from bone contours
lingers in folds of neck and jaw.
She looks now with affection
Into the eyes of her old acquaintance
Leans forward, salutes
the reflection in the mirror
"All in all, you old devil,
we haven't done so badly."
They both rise, she and her old acquaintance,
and walk in opposite directions.
