The April 8th eclipse will pass directly over my house in a matter of hours. I'm delaying business travel until Tuesday in order to be home to see it.
I tutor my cousin Jack in math. After we finished going over his assignment this evening, I had this brief exchange with his older sister, Grace.
Grace: So why is this eclipse such a big deal?
Me: It's a big deal because it's a total eclipse: the sun will be completely covered by the moon. The last time New York experienced a total eclipse was about a hundred years ago. The next one won't occur for another 55 years.
Grace: Okay.... So it really isn't a "once in a lifetime event."
Me:
Grace:
Me: You're 16 years old. I'm 63. I guess that depends on whose lifetime we're talking about.

About six years ago we were in the path for a 100% eclipse. My son Boom-Boom, was taking it in stride, but his aunt, my sister-in-law, thought the need to impress upon him the rarity of the event by saying that this wouldn’t occur right over the farm for another 300 years, so this was his one chance to see it. Boom-Boom stretched, and replied, “I quit smoking.”

I've been waiting for this one for a while now. Alas...clouds and rain are the forecast for my location.

It's overcast here too, so I'm gonna wait until tomorrow to see it.

This time of year up here in the damp, frozen north we can count on blue skies about one day out of five, but today is clear and beautiful, not a cloud in sight. I think we got lucky.
