That is a saying that I remember from way back in my youth.
I don't think it is really true because time cannot be saved, while money is easily saved but often poorly spent. I now have far less time than I have money to spend. I don't worry about excess money, but I do cherish the time I have spent and the time I have left.
The few good things I did with my time now occasionally come back to reward me with the blessings of unexpected joy. Living a life of being useful is the best investment of time I could have ever made, and I thank God every day I was given the opportunity to do that.
Go forth and at least be useful was not a proclamation I ever read in the gospels, but it seems to have worked for me.
It will also work for you.

A little off topic, but here in East Ohio there is a radio commercial that drives me crazy. The narrator says, "We've all heard the term, 'Time is money'." I can't help but yell at the radio, "It's a saying, not a term!" As you correctly say.

If we live normally decent lives, we spend the first half spending time to make money - and the last half spending money to make time.
