The Democrats cannot afford to run Biden for this election. The evidence of his physical and mental degeneration is on full display. The latest desperate attempt to cover for him is leading White House officials and media allies to say that the videos of him mumbling and stumbling and wandering off are "cheap fakes."
I predict they will replace Joe Biden with VP Kamala Harris. The only question is when.
My prediction is it will happen during the Democratic Convention. The power brokers in the Democrat party will find a way to pay off Dr. Jill and get her to agree to tell Joe he's got to go. He will make a big speech about getting out, and that will be that.
I also predict they will stick with Kamala Harris as the nominee, but put in a VP that has... what was it they said Bush lacked? Ah yes, gravitas.

They stand more of a chance of winning if they put in Newsom, for example. There would be outrage from the People Of Color, but they really shouldn't care if they're serious about wanting to make things better, and Kamala wouldn't. Hopefully just putting Kamala at the top wouldn't get people to believe it's okay to vote Democrat again. Most likely it would only be black women insisting that Kamala take the top spot, but they weren't going to stop voting D anyway. And hopefully black men wouldn't be fooled.
May not be necessary, they could probably just tell Joe that he's served two terms and the world is now perfect.
And remember FJB was supposed to be Obama's "gravitas." Who knows who they might come up with for Kamala?

Don’t they have a problem getting someone nominated during their convention on the ballot in Ohio? I thought they planned to nominate Joe before the convention to avoid that situation.

It depends on Biden's debate performance. If he manages to stay coherent, they'll stick with him. If he self-destructs, I think they will have Biden bow out gracefully at the beginning of the convention. Then the delegates will vote for a new nominee from a preselected slate of candidates, including Kamala. She won't win, but they can say she had a fair shot, and it wasn't racism/sexism that denied her her shot at the presidency. They'll probably go with Whitmer of Michigan, or Shapiro of Pennsylvania.

I can't imagine Kamala being a much better choice than Biden. If they're going to play switcheroo, surely they'll switch out someone else.
The Dems have painted themselves into a corner with their full-on embrace of identity politics. As a white, heterosexual male, bringing in Newsom would cause deafening shrieks from the identitarian left. Hilary isn't that much younger than Biden, is disliked almost as much as Kamala, and has fewer intersectional points (maybe she'll come out as lesbian to get back a point :)). With Michelle, they'd at least avoid the intersectional identity issue.
My long-shot prediction is they'll bring in Michelle, and she just might win.

They will run Harris for gov. of Calif. clearing the way to run Newsom. Making it a way to save face for not picking her.
