OK, the typical thief or common criminal is not very bright and not a long-term thinker.
A professional colleague (I’m a lawyer) who once worked as a criminal prosecutor said the criminal justice system is saved from collapse largely by the fact that most criminals are really stupid, and therefore it’s not hard to prove they are guilty of the crimes for which they are charged.
And a deputy sheriff in the crime prevention section of our county sheriff’s department also said criminals think differently from us. He said that the typical common thief is not a long-term planner. For such a thief, lunch is long-term planning. He is looking for crimes of immediate opportunity.
But I would think a guy with an actual job (or business) driving a tow truck would be at least a step or two above the common thief.
Nonetheless, a tow truck operator decided (after checking one of those apps that posts ICE enforcement activity) that he would use his tow truck to take a vehicle belonging to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) while the ICE officers were arresting an illegal immigrant. And, apparently, he posted his theft to TikTok.
What did he think would happen? Did he think?
Intentionally taking a vehicle he knew belonged to a federal law enforcement agency? And posting that taking on TikTok?
Did he really not think the federal law enforcement agency would find him? That he wouldn’t get punished? That years of consequences would be worth a few hours or minutes of fun and notoriety?
What has happened to basic thinking, logic, and planning?
I recognize that I’m on the extreme end of planning and thinking far into the future. But it somewhat horrifies me when I see how little my fellow humans think about even the most basic of the future and the consequences of their actions. Whither basic logic?
This story just struck me as a funny "Idiot of the Week" story.
