And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger Luke 2:8-12, NIV
Angels are terrifying. Think of a flame that burns with a light that pierces your soul, with a voice like a thunderstorm. His eyes judge all your transgressions, and his power is unquestionable. These shepherds were reacting perfectly normally.
On the other hand, there are few things less terrifying than a newborn baby. A baby is loud & can smell bad, but that's it. For people used to raising sheep, like these shepherds or our own @She, that's nothing.
However, the infant they were rushing to greet had created all the angels, along with the universe. This harmless baby was the most important Man to ever be born. This is what we celebrate — the Almighty taking the lowest of our forms, with all our weaknesses. We do not have to be afraid of Him, whether He is in the manger or on the cross.
