Democrats believe that America is not democratic enough for NATO

Powerline's John Hinderaker has a characteristically insightful column up about a New York Times interview with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Rutte has publicly agreed with President Trump that, "The Europeans have not pulled their weight in NATO, and need to get serious, quickly, to counter the growing threat from Russia." Hearing this from a European obviously enraged the Democrat Party, so they had a New York Times reporter (Lulu Garcia-Navarro) interview interrogate Mr. Rutte.

It was a remarkable conversation. Mr. Rutte keeps trying to talk about how Europe hopes to help provide for its own security, when all the reporter can think about is Trump. No matter what Mr. Rutte says, regardless of the topic, she keeps asking questions making accusatory statements about Trump. It's like she can't hear his responses or something. It's surreal. He seems confused, at times, as though they were having two different conversations.

You should read the whole post. It's remarkable. But I'll quote her last question accusatory statement about Trump - it's amazing. She suggests that America is not democratic enough for membership in NATO. Pasted from Hinderaker's article:

Hinderaker: OK, one more. The Times reporter suggests that the United States may not be democratic enough to belong to NATO:

Navarro: "But part of the idea of NATO is about allies who share a commitment to democratic values. It was created for that. And now you have as part of this alliance what some would call a democratically backsliding United States. You have Hungary, which calls itself an illiberal democracy. And you have Turkey under President Erdogan, which has been called an electoral autocracy. Can this alliance hold when the very values at its heart are no longer commonly held in the way that perhaps they once had been?"

Hinderaker: By this time Rutte must be tired of it all, but he responds diplomatically:

Rutte: "I’m not sure I would completely subscribe to all the assumptions in your question, but that is a debate, as democracies, that we can have, and that is why we are indeed an alliance of democracies. …"

Hinderaker: This is what passes for journalism on the Left. If Navarro were intelligent and were willing to listen to Rutte with an open mind, and actually hear what he is saying, she might have learned something. Her readers might have learned something, too. But at the Times, ignorance is invincible.

She describes us as "a democratically backsliding United States." Why does she feel that America is no longer really a democracy? Because Republicans won the last election.

How did President Trump become President? He was elected by Americans. In an election. Twice. At least.

But she clearly believes that when Republicans win elections, that that is not democracy.

Her interview interrogation is absurd. But we shouldn't laugh at her.

She didn't listen to Mr. Rutte. But we should listen carefully to what she's saying. Because many, MANY of her fellow Democrats see things the same way.

The Democrat Party's disdain for elections and lack of interest in the will of the people is terrifying.

We should listen to what they're saying.

She's far from alone there. Add in Hillary Clinton, and many others.

I note the left always phrases it as "our democracy" which I have come to understand simply means that state of being "when Democrats win the elections."

Maybe she was referring to the 2024 democrat primary. More than a backslide in my book.

They are having two different conversations. Ms. Garcia-Navarro has TDS. Mr. Rutte does not.
