There are some things I miss about being on the streets as a police officer. I do miss the roll calls and the officers I worked with on the streets.
I miss the officer, my partner I worked with on any number of calls. We gave a 19-year-old female jumper on a bridge deck a little over 100 feet above the pavement a second chance. We took her to a hospital for a 72-hour psych-hold after getting close enough to grab her. I hope someone was able to help her in that 72-hour hold.
I still think about three officers I knew who lost their lives in shooting incidents. Three empty seats at roll call over several years.
What I don't miss is the following story from KOIN:
An arson suspect is again in custody after police said he started numerous fires over a 10-day stretch and started more fires after he was released from jail, then re-arrested, on Wednesday. According to Portland police, just before 8 p.m. on Tuesday night, officers responded to a reported vehicle fire near Northeast Failing Street and North Vancouver Avenue, where they found a burned vehicle. After the arrest, Edwards was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on numerous charges at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. Edwards was released a few hours later, and police said they believe he lit another six to eight fires between Downtown Portland and North Portland, resulting in his second arrest within just a few hours. He was once again booked into jail just after noon on Wednesday It’s unclear at this time why Edwards was initially released from custody. Police said they also believe Edwards is responsible for the fires around and near Irving Park on July 20 and July 27, and more charges will be added once he is booked again. So far, the arson fires allegedly connected to Edwards include: 100 block of NW 6th Ave: Garbage cans burned NW 8th Ave and Glisan St: Garbage cans burned NW 9th Ave and Johnson St: Mattress and debris burned 300 block of North Broadway: Mattress and debris burned 1800 block of NE 1st Ave: Garbage cans burned N Williams Ave and NE San Rafael St: Garbage can burned
I don't miss the failure to apply some common sense after someone like this is arrested.

I think there ought to be a program that when someone is appointed to the bench, the jurisdiction must buy a house within one block of the judge's home. Violent criminals released by that judge on personal recognizance or bond must move to that new group house until trial. The opinions and experiences of the judge's spouse and neighbors would likely have a salutary effect on future rulings.
