It is quite clear to me that Melanie Phillips is right:

"It’s as if a cultural wire has tripped, or a fuse has blown".

The burning in the UK is over the false account that the murder of three girls, aged 6, 7, and 9 years old, by an asylum-seeker from Syria — with a knife, BTW. (I thought only guns killed people, but that is a story for another post). Instead, it was the son of Rwandan immigrants who was born in the UK.

Still.

This is all too common now. In a world where the leaders of the West have let leftist riots go unpunished, they are cracking down on the right. As she points out:

There’s been a remorseless series of attacks by Muslim extremists. After the 7/7 London bombings that killed 52 people in July 2005, the attack in 2017 on an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester killed 22 and injured more than a thousand. Eight people were murdered and 48 injured in the London Bridge attack a month later. In 2021, a teacher in Batley, West Yorkshire, went into hiding for his life after showing an image of Muhammad to his pupils in a lesson about the limits of free speech; he is still in hiding. In 2023, a 14 year-old autistic boy in Wakefield who dropped a copy of the Quran in the corridor of his Wakefield school during a prank received death threats and was harassed and demonised. Earlier this year, Muslim activists took London’s secular Michaela school to court in an unsuccessful attempt to get the school to kowtow to demands for a prayer room.

And here we are. The leaders of the West in power, both Liberal and Conservative, no matter where they are, have engaged in nearly unlimited importation of people without Western values. In America, we are importing people that other nations don't want within their borders. This is not a brain drain of the best and brightest.

John Derbyshire has noted that by rejecting anyone who mentions hard truths about races and religions, by banishing these topics from acceptable speech, people are driven to listen to unacceptable speech. Of course, "Derb" was banished from National Review for "Racism" in April 2012 for things not said at National Review, but elsewhere. The need to shun difficult conversations is not just happening on the left.

And here we are.

The elite and powerful — those with real power, those with megaphones, those in control of the public square — work very hard to stop things from being said. They are not talked about. Anyone who does is deemed racist. Ms. Phillips says this is on the left, but it is not. Topics are rendered off-limits. Things cannot be said in polite company. That is not true everywhere. At Ricochet, we tolerate some of what I would consider pretty foul thoughts. But Ricochet is not part of the national conversation. In fact, many people here use pseudonyms because they feel they have to hide who they are to be safe. That fear, the reality of needing to do so, means we are not really having an impact on what can and cannot be said.

And here we are.

This is why no matter how people in the West vote, no matter who is in power, the borders are not closed. Immigration of all types continues unabated, despite decades of the majority making clear that they don't want it. Even when Trump was trying, the GOP in Congress blocked him. Conservatism, Inc. does not want a stop to illegal immigration. If they did, they would have done so in 2016. If they did, they would have a whole issue of National Review "Against Illegal Immigration." I am not going to hold my breath. We know the liberals all want as much as they can get.

The ballot box does not matter when it comes to stopping immigration, legal or otherwise.

What about speaking out against it? The elites simply do not care. And they will do anything and everything they can to stop people from speaking the truth. People are canceled. YouTube channels are banned. Political commentators are banished. People are afraid to be conservative in public. Anyone and everyone who calls for illegal immigration to stop is branded a racist.

The soapbox does not matter when it comes to stopping immigration, legal or otherwise.

What is left? If we cannot vote for a change in policy because neither side cares, and if we are prevented from addressing this in public, let alone petitioning the government for a redress of grievances (where have I heard that before?), then what options are left?

All that is left is violence. This is the sad architecture of the elites. Not just the people elected, but the unelected, the people unwilling to even let us have the conversations. The fear of being destroyed by the beast that has been let loose by the elites. People are fed up of being ignored and silenced. This is what happens. And there are violent men in the wings: outcasts, willing, ready, and more than able to fan and forward the violence.

Coming to a city near you.

Can't find anything here I disagree with.

We told the GOPe and the Dems that Trump is a minor reaction to their ignoring the people. They continued to ignore us. They've brought this on themselves.

    Buy guns and ammo.

The stabber was born in Cardiff. His parents are from Rwanda. I don't know their ethnic group, but I suspect Tutsi.

That bit where only approved thoughts can be vocalized does amazing things for those in power. Right up until everything blows up.
