Trump at the Lincoln Memorial

I was excited to hear that Trump would go live at the Lincoln Memorial to give his closing pitch for the midterms. I was hopeful for a rousing close to a Republican campaign that has otherwise been rather lackluster.

But no. The speech was at the Reflecting Pool — the Lincoln Memorial was not visible. The crowd was small and gave only tepid applause. He started by announcing that it would be renamed the Trump Reflecting Pool. He then said it was a joke, but it reminded viewers of his narcissism. He spent 25 minutes bragging about the Reflecting Pool refurbishment and the vandalism, cleaning up graffiti in DC, statues, the helipad, the lifecycle of grass at the White House, and something about red stone at Columbus Circle (I was losing interest at this point and just skipping ahead). He had plenty of pictures on posters, along with an assistant to hold them up.

Finally, after the long self-promotional tour, he got to the crazy DSA candidates running in the midterms. But it was too late.

Why can't he get out of his own way? Trump has many genuine accomplishments to sell, but instead he gets hung up on the Reflecting Pool. Why, oh, why?

We should get used to his bragging and distractions by now, but I think for some of us, they get old.

I haven't listened to his speech. However, I just want to say that he is feeling defensive, which is completely understandable, and that's what's causing him to sound so focused on himself.

I'm not bothered by any of that, but I'm not his audience. I'm voting straight Republican regardless, but there are still some people out there who could be convinced. In fact, I'm concerned he alienated some voters by reminding them of his narcissism and obsession with minor things like grass at the White House when there are two wars going on and prices are high.

Has the man ever been able to get out of his own way?

Renaming the Kennedy Center to the Trump-Kennedy Center was also a joke to start with; then it became a serious obsession. I think Donald Trump floats various narcissistic ideas as a joke; then, after taking a little time to think about it, he starts to take the ideas seriously. Calling Canada the 51st state was an insult directed at Justin Trudeau. Trudeau isn't PM anymore, but Donald Trump keeps bringing up his fantasy of making Canada a U.S. state.
