Entering the harbor at Depoe Bay . . . . #Oregoncoast #PacificOcean #exploregon #pnwlife #Oregon ...

Depoe Bay in Oregon is also known as "The Hole." It is the smallest natural harbor in the world.

The entrance to the harbor from the largest ocean in the world to the smallest harbor in the world is about 50 feet wide, 100 feet long, and about 7 feet deep.

Pacific, if used as an adjective, means peaceful in character or intent. The origin of the word from the mid-16th century: from French pacifique or Latin pacificus, "peacemaking," from pax, pac - "peace."

The Pacific Ocean is not peaceful, especially in the Pacific Northwest and further north in Canada and Alaska. The Pacific Ocean is somewhat peaceful during the summer in the north. What doesn't change is the water temperature. 61° F is about the warmest the Pacific gets in the Pacific Northwest. During the summer months water temperatures in the 50s are still more common in the northern Pacific than a 61° day.

The economy of Depoe Bay depends upon commercial fishing, fishing charters, whale watching charters, as well as tourists who are satisfied with remaining on shore.

The economy of Depoe Bay also relies on its Coast Guard Station, also known as 'The Hole in the Wall Gang'.

My daughter has a friend who is in the Coast Guard. The Coasties who patrol the area around the mouth of the Columbia River are regarded as the finest small boat handlers in the world. God bless them.

Amazing. That it takes skill and daring just to leave and return to the harbor is unique.

One would think there is enough economic activity to justify widening that outlet and extending seawalls to reduce waves.
