This offensive ad is running across channels in Maryland, with Barack Obama urging voters to approve Question 3 that would give the state legislature authority to ignore both the state constitution and SCOTUS precedent requiring congressional districts to be contiguous and reasonably compact.
Maryland is already gerrymandered: Seven of eight districts are drawn wildly to give Democratic majorities, including mine, which used to have a GOP representative. Republicans make up 30 to 40% of voters but have 12.5% of the districts. Question 3 aims to permit absurd lines from Baltimore into the Eastern Shore, the last remaining GOP district, and also increase the use of snakelike maps elsewhere, such as the last concoction the all-Democrat highest court tossed as absurd and unconstitutional.
Obama says this is simple fairness to offset GOP gains in TX and FL, allegedly unlawfully crafted at Trump's direction. In fact it is an additional abuse of majority power and extinguishes GOP representation. That Marxist, Iran-toady is no longer in the White House, but he still makes me want to punch my TV when I hear his pompous, self-regarding, lying voice. Raw, unprincipled partisan malfeasance presented as saving democracy is beneath contempt, but it is so very Obama.

Whew! At first I thought I was going to have to listen to the ad to know what was in it. Thanks for explaining. I've never been able to tolerate that man's voice. Right up there with Tucker's giggle.

Obama is definitely burnishing his legacy with his campaigning this cycle. What is that legacy?
He did more damage to race relations than any President since Wilson. He was at at again in Michigan, playing identitarian games with ElSayed. I’m surprised he didn’t say, ‘If I had a nephew, he would look like Abdul.’
He was an inveterate liar, more skilled at lying than Lyndon Johnson. “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.” And there he was claiming he had prvented an Iranian nuke. Pretty weak gruel.
He loved Islamists. He tried to give four billion dollars of military hardware to the Muslim brotherhood in Egypt. He armed the Islamic State and let them run wild. He gave 2 billion to Hamas, released 150 billion to Iran and the gave them a plane load of cash to boot. No greater lover of terrorists has ever been near the Whitehouse, although I can’t say they same about Gracie Mansion. He was there with fellow terrorist loving traveler El Sayed in Michigan.
He famously disdained ordinary Americans, those bitter clingers, something he shared perfectly with Hillary. And there he was awkwardly insulting Cheesecake Factory clientele.
He clearly despises any architectural style that isn’t brutalist (er, soviet modernist).

I already voted against this piece of malfeasance. But I’m in that 30 to 40% of losers who cannot quite bear to leave my grandchildren to camp out permanently in Florida.

To be fair, isn't this exactly what Trump urged all republican States to do before the midterm elections? He even threatened to Primary Indiana lawmakers who would not implement gerrymandering their state districts. I think he was successful in getting rid of five of them by sponsoring primary opponents against them.

This was a deemed great offense on his part. The traditional GOP response is to politely ignore any such partisan overreach as in CA. Trump is the anti-RINO with respect to polite acquiescence. The second issue is that these changes did not wait for a new census report as is the norm. It is noteworthy that red states had room for gerrymandering but MD and CA were already so gerrymandered they had to remove any vestige of legal order (Newsome's move to abolish and already very partisan commission and MD gutting minimal constitutional requirements).
Angry speeches from reps from MA (9-0 Dem) and CT (5-0) were amazingly lacking in self-awareness.
Some gerrymandering is an inevitable part of the process. SCOTUS has formally acknowledged that. The OP is about (a) extreme, abusive use of legislative power and (b) the incredible hypocrisy and dishonesty of the Dem response and the Obama ad in particular.
