Tired of the toxicity of social media? Why not join Ricochet for just $5/month? Think of it as an online bar. Come in, have a drink, hang out, say whatever you want. But don’t badger, bully, or berate the other drinkers. That's our only rule.
Dear Ms. Anderson and Mr. Koneki,
After moving to Florida in 2006, we learned that the Orlando Sentinel was the largest local newspaper and we subscribed. Over the years, we became more and more disillusioned with the decidedly leftist slant of the newspaper, except for some even-handed treatment on the Opinion page. But eventually I wondered if you had insisted that your Opinion editor toe the line, and with a few exceptions, it was clear that even the Opinion page had been co-opted. Now and then I read an article that sounded close to fair and objective, but it was rare, especially on controversial topics.
I should explain that I am a Conservative and Republican and not a White Supremacist, and although we would likely disagree on political positions, you'd probably agree that I am relatively sane. I also am a Contributor at Ricochet.com, a conservative website for civil conversation. We tell people our bias up front.
So I stayed with the newspaper, because I like the puzzles page (pretty pathetic reason, no?) and I wanted the updates for the political realm. I became fairly skilled at sifting out the overwhelmingly biased positions on Ron DeSantis, and your descriptions of "book banning" (which does not exist). I even tolerated your "Don't Say Gay" reports, which from journalistic standards, were embarrassing to the extreme.
Finally I switched to a digital subscription, but in the past year, it became clear to me that I was being punished for my limited commitment. Even though I had auto-renew, you insisted that I had to contact the paper for, I was told, being "credentialed." Credentialed for what? I was denied digital access until I complied. Unfortunately you decided to require my "credentialing" on January 1--and of course your call-in department was closed. No puzzles that day. No news.
And now, finally, no digital subscription for me.
It was not nice knowing you.
Regards, Susan Quinn, Poinciana, FL

Nice, fair, cogent, intelligent.
But I wonder if the people who have a mind set and outlook that leads them to produce the craziness are capable of self-reflection, or welcoming of criticism from obvious knuckle dragging nazis like us?
I suspect you lost them at “ . . . I am a Conservative”.

Thanks, Scarecrow. I thought it was only right to put all my cards on the table--which they obviously rarely do. I knew if I gave a nasty rant that they would blow me off. I also don't expect them to change anything. But if we don't call them out, aren't we complicit?
Edit: Plus, I feel lots better having done it!

Let's see if this gives Ricochet a little boost.

I didn't send it to the "Letters" editor, so it probably has no chance of being in the paper. I sent it directly to those editors whose names you see. Of course, if they asked my permission to publish it....

I dumped the Atlantic when it occurred to me that the only content I was completing was the double acrostic.
Michael Kelly, ave atque vale.
