‘Gun Violence’ and Children

I routinely hear the Leftist talking point that "gun violence" is the leading cause of death among children. Leaving aside the "gun violence" phrasing ... the stat itself is misleading in the extreme. "Children" technically means anyone under the age of 18. So "children" covers a lot of ground. But when you think of "children" are you thinking of a 17 year-old? Probably not. But THAT'S the age group where the "gun violence" deaths are clustered. Let's look at the mortality stats for what most of us would consider "children" ... ages 1-14. The following was created from data gathered from childstats.gov...

Table PHY7.B Child injury and mortality: Death rates among children ages 1–14 (Deaths per 100,000 children)

The two leading causes of death for kids 1-14 are Motor Vehicle Traffic Accidents and Drowning. (I dug around but couldn't find out how many of the Suicide deaths [1.2 per 100,000] were embedded in the Firearms deaths number of 2.4 per 100,000.)

So, if Leftists genuinely wanted to have the greatest impact on reducing childhood deaths they'd focus on pools and car seats rather than guns. But no. As usual it's never about what it's allegedly about.

I'd like to know how many were gang shootings.

Well done, Ekosj!! That lays out the issue beautifully. One more effort by the Left to manipulate the issue.

The data are illuminating but I don't think that splitting hairs in this case would be a winning argument. Seventeen year olds are children, they are just not innocents when it comes to gangs and firearms. But it is a tragedy nonetheless, just not one that gun control solves. I suspect fathers would help a lot.

It's the violent guns. If only they'd make non-violent firearms...or send the violent guns to anger management.
