I’m sure many of you have seen this news story: A trucker decided to use an emergency lane to turn around on a Florida highway. They turned from the right travel lane into the median and a car crashed into the trailer, killing three. There are videos online that show the impact - it’s pretty awful, as you can imagine. It turns out that “During the investigation, with assistance from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), authorities determined Singh had entered the United States illegally in 2018 after crossing the Mexican border. He later obtained a commercial driver’s license in California.”

So this event bears on several ongoing national issues. First, the massive number of illegal immigrants in the country. Second, some states choose to blithely ignore immigration status. Third, recent changes in the requirements for a commercial driver's license, all directed by the federal government. It appears that the fed rules became so strict that cheating is rampant. There is an ongoing scandal in one state (Kentucky, IIRC) about DMV employees issuing CDLs for cash bribes, and a whistleblower being punished for reporting it. I follow one guy on Twitter (a trucker) who has been raging on the issue of immigrant truckers who can’t speak English.

This also bears on the notion of state reciprocity. Why should Florida honor California CDLs if California won’t properly vet CDL holders?

The intentional acceptance of massive illegal immigration by a combination of Democrats hungry for voters and cynical businessmen loving low-wage labor is destroying the social compact. Maybe it’s already destroyed it. I hope it’s not too late.

I don't think it's too late. However, my fix would probably be taken to court. The bottom line - anyone here who doesn't speak English is a suspect, period. If we can legally do license checks and set up sobriety checkpoints, why not include whether or not the person stopped speaks English? If not, detain the person and notify ICE. After all, if they're here legally, aren't they supposed to carry informationstating as such? If they are here legally (sych as for work), shouldn't they know some English to facilitate doing their job?

Democrats should know that there are many people on the right who would consider doing something for the children who were brought here illegally. However, they demand full compliance with what they want or they oppose everything being done, even if it means supporting illegal alien criminals . . .

Note the vehicle that hit the trailer was a Chrysler minivan. The left tells me that only Teslas can do that:

We really should look at the Florida drivers who hit trailers. Huge numbers of these incidents are in Florida.

Trump is already one this. I hope that this is not the strict rule that is causing the cheating, but I'm sure it is. Doesn't seem too strict to me.

Also, I know @DaveCarter hasn't driven a semi in a while, but I'd like his take on this.

The Feds mandated a bunch of extra hours of training a few years ago. Agencies and companies were mostly unable to have their own training programs. It made it way harder for school districts, for one example, to train bus drivers.

Sounds a lot like how Biden ruined the training pipeline for air traffic controllers. Sounds like someone decided too many free thinking white guys were driving independent trucks and that needed to change. At the same time, CA decided there were too many truck on the road and declared they all have to be climate specials (that nobody makes and cost gazillions.) Who could possibly have expected cheating up and down the chain.
