The rain gods came to help Team USA today in the T20 Cricket World Cup. USA has beaten Canada and amazingly Pakistan while losing to India. Today was their last match of the Group Stage, facing Ireland. There are four groups and the top two in each group advance. USA was in second place with four points. Teams get two points for a win one point goes to each team if the game is called. Pakistan's final Group Stage match is on Sunday, also against Ireland.
If USA had lost today and Pakistan won on Sunday, Pakistan would have advanced. They would be tied in points with USA but have a higher net run rate and so would be higher in the rankings. The net run rate is basically a measure of how much more you score than the opposing team.
Yesterday's match was scheduled for 7:30 am PDT in Broward County Stadium near Ft. Lauderdale. But it was raining. Like Baseball, Cricket is not played in the rain. And it kept raining; raining until they abandoned the match without a ball bowled. That means they get one point for a total of five and it becomes impossible for Pakistan to get ahead of them in the standings. Not the most exciting way to advance past the Group Stage, but a great achievement for Team USA.
The Super Eight stage starts June 19th in Antigua and Barbuda with USA facing South Africa. I will get my explaining Cricket post up before then.

We look forward to the explanation post!
You've been patient with my inability to make the memories of the rules stick from year to year. My son's long been a fan of the game. He's something of a paleo-"base-ball" history buff as well and has pointed out ancient Darwinian linkages in the evolution of the two sports.
