After 12 years, the First Amendment trial of Mark Steyn has begun in Washington, DC. Steyn (and Rand Simberg) are being sued for defamation by the odious Michael Mann, father of the global warming "hockey stick" graph. Steyn is representing himself at trial, which is being held in Courtroom 518 of the DC Superior Court. I watched Steyn's opening statement on Thursday and it was wonderful. For further information on the trial and how to view it remotely, you can go here.

    The US.

    Lots of law.

    No Justice.

12 years to get to trial. The process is the punishment.

I truly hope that Mann is forced to pay for all the legal fees as well. When National Review settled this suit long ago it was a sign that they were loosing their focus.

Yes. I listened this morning to this week's "Clubland Q&A." Anyone can listen, although you have to be a member to send Mark a question. He covers quite a bit of what's going on in court, in his usual inimitable style.

I really hope he wins this one. The mere fact that it's taken twelve years for what's--on the face of it--such an inconsequential episode to get this far is an absolute disgrace. And clearly, he's not well. It would be nice if he could spend his remaining years in relative peace, although I'm not sure that's likely, regardless of the outcome here. Like a dearly-beloved and dearly-departed close relative of my own, Mark does tend to bring his own china shop with him wherever he goes. It's one of the things that I find quite endearing about him.
